My Retrospective Review of the Back to the Future Trilogy; Post October 21st, 2015

The week of October 21st, 2015, I realized that the Back to the Future trilogy was being featured on Amazon Prime streaming; as well as the documentary, Back in Time. So I finished the series last night and decided it would be interesting to share my review of all 3 movies, in hindsight.

Now that we are officially living in the future, according to Back to the Future Part 2, I was able to see how each of the 3 movies still holds up.

Here’s my analysis:

Back to the Future Part 1 is the best.

Part 3 is my favorite.

Part 2 was my least favorite and the least relevant to the series.

Back when I was a kid, I thought Part 2 was the best one because it attempted to show me a glimpse of the future. Hoverboards!

But really, Part 2 was the strange off-the-beaten path installment that have easily been removed from the series and the storyline would have been just as strong. Not to mention, seeing it again as an adult, Part 2 was the darkest and most tedious of the series.

My Retrospective Review of the Back to the Future Trilogy; Post October 21st, 2015

I was surprised at how little of Part 2 actually took place in the good version of 2015. Most of the movie is in the dystopian version of 2015 and then back to 1955 again.

The reason I like Part 3 the best is because I feel it’s the most charming. The plot was simple enough and I loved the chemistry between Doc Brown and Clara. I appreciated how it utilized so many of the original characters of the first two movies.

Just overall, it’s easier to watch; and I feel, the most fun.

Granted, Part 1 is the best. It’s not my personal favorite, but it’s the best. It was the most original, innovative, and legendary.

Interestingly enough, the critics of Rotten Tomatoes agree with my assessment that Part 1 is the best, Part 3 is the second best, and Part 2 is the least best.

My Retrospective Review of the Back to the Future Trilogy; Post October 21st, 2015

In closing, I want to point out this:

Despite these movies being generically remembered as “family friendly” movies, for the most part, they are not:

If Part 1 were released today, it would definitely be rated PG-13.

It features constant swearing (nearly every word in the book) as well as religious exclamations (using God’s name in vain), casual marijuana use (the band at the prom), attempted sexual assault (George McFly saves the day by stopping Biff from taking advantage of his future wife), implied sexual activity involving minors (17 year-old Marty McFly and his girlfriend are planning to spend the night together in the back of his Toyota pick-up truck) and violence: Doc Brown is shot in the chest with machine guns by Liberian terrorists.

Part 3 is the tamest; containing the least profanity, hardly any innuendoes, and the violence is simply cartoonish. It would uphold its PG rating.

Part 2 is somewhere in between the two, but I could easily see it being rated PG-13.

Thanks for reading! If you’ve have recently seen the Back to the Future trilogy, I would be curious to see if you agree with my assessment.

Nashville Auto Show 2015: Pictures of the 2016 Chevrolet Lineup

Next month makes 4 years since my family has been involved with Chevrolet. Back in December 2011, we drove a Chevy Volt from Naples to Key West, Florida. They’ve flown me up to Detroit a few times as well. And this past summer, they let us drive a 2015 Colorado to go see our nephew graduate boot camp in Montgomery, Alabama.

This week Chevy invited me to the Nashville Auto Show, to check out their new 2016 vehicles. I particular enjoyed getting to sit in the 2016 Corvette… but what guy wouldn’t?

I’ll be going there with my son tomorrow so he can see all the cars. But as for today, I had the whole place to myself.

With the way Nashville traffic works, I knew that if I didn’t leave super early, I’d get there fairly late. So I was able to take pictures of the vehicles, in order to share them with anyone out there on the Internet who is such a Chevy fan they wanted to catch a peak of the new line-up.

So here’s your sneak peak:

Thanks for taking a look at all these pictures I took of the 2016 Chevy lineup. Time (and statistics) will tell whether a post like this does well.

I just thought it might be a decent place for car enthusiasts to be able to catch some glimpses of the new Chevy lineup all in one place.

After seeing the City Express, it makes me sort of wish Chevy would turn this into a family friendly vehicle; kind of like a cross behind a small SUV and an updated minivan. That’s basically what it seems to me anyway; and I like it.

Brian’s Homemade Vegan/Vegetarian Tomato Soup Recipe

Earlier this week I began inviting potential guest bloggers to send me their vegan/vegetable recipes, in my attempt to help create a collaborate experience. After all, I know there are plenty of families out there who aren’t actually vegan/vegetarian, but who are experimenting with vegan/vegetarian recipes.

The first to respond was Brian, with his blog, Love, Food and Beer, featuring his homemade vegan/vegetarian tomato soup recipe. Here it is:

“This healthy, vegan tomato soup recipe was my first attempt at digestive redemption following the misguided (albeit delicious) aforementioned meal. In short, I came home with a hankering for soup, the realization that I should have a salad, and the industriousness to attempt a combination of the two. I scoured my cabinets and the recesses of my refrigerator, and produced the following ingredients, which I turned into a simple, hearty, and beautifully rust-colored tomato soup.

wpid-img_20150914_182643.jpg

Ingredients:

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1/2 red onion – diced

1 large carrot – peeled and diced

1 clove garlic – minced

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp dried thyme

1/4 tsp celery salt

1 large can (28 oz) diced tomato

1 1/2 cups veggie broth

2 cups mixed “super” greens (chard, kale, spinach, etc.)

salt and pepper

Directions:

Prepare all of the ingredients first. Believe me, this stuff is way easier if you prep ahead of time.

Heat the olive oil in a medium soup pan over medium heat.

When the oil is hot, add the onions and carrots. Saute the vegetables, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until they’re just softened.

wpid-20150914_174313.jpg

Add the garlic, basil, thyme, and celery salt, and stir until they’re well-mixed and effervescent (about 60-90 seconds).

Add the tomato and veggie broth and mix.

wpid-20150914_180204.jpg

Puree the mixture in one of two ways. Either pour the mixture into a blender or food processor, and puree until smooth, or use an immersion blender (the most wonderful kitchen tool in the world) to puree the tomatoes and vegetables in the soup pan.

Add a pinch each of salt and pepper, and cook the tomato mixture for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After the soup has cooked down just a bit, add the greens, and another pinch of salt and pepper (give it a taste) and puree the greens into the soup in the same manner as before.

Return to the heat, add salt and pepper to taste, and serve it up when you’re ready!

For the record, I definitely made a gooey grilled cheese to go with this soup. Granted, this totally negates the vegan-ness of the meal… but that’s definitely the point of the grilled cheese. Cheese is delicious.” -Chris

Here’s what I’m looking for in a guest blogger:

1)      In 300 words or more, share your (and/or your family’s) journey of exploring the vegan/vegetarian path. What positive benefits have you noticed since experimenting with a diet free of dairy, eggs, and or meat? Or simply share a vegan/vegetarian recipe that your family enjoyed, like my wife does.

2)      Share relevant pictures in the post. Make your story come to life by including photographs to illustrate; even if they are just from Instagram.

3)      Email your blog post and pictures to me at nickshell1983@hotmail.com.

I am excited about this new blog series. It will be a collaborative experience. I’m used to hosting the discussion about the plant-based life, but I eagerly invite you, the reader, to join me on stage.

If you already have your own blog, this could be a good way to grow your own audience, as I will obviously include the link to your blog in the post.

I look forward to hearing from you!

-Nick

Dear Jack: Your 5th Birthday is So Close!

4 years, 11 months.

Dear Jack: You’re 5th Birthday is So Close!

Dear Jack,

You will turn 5 on Monday, November 16th. That’s about a week and a half from now!

For the past couple of months, you’ve been “nearly 5 months” in my head anyway. Soon, we’ll make it official.

For your whole life, you have been receiving a new book from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, each month. Today’s book apparently is the final one; as the program ends when you turn 5.

The book is called Look Out, Kindergarten, Here I Come! Granted, you won’t be starting Kindergarten until August 2016; around the time Mommy returns to work from being on maternity leave.

This week you also received your first birthday gift, in the mail. Tuesday afternoon as I was taking out the garbage, I noticed a box on our front step.

I assumed Mommy had ordered some maternity clothes from online. But we quickly figured out it was for you instead.

Brian Murphy's Homemade Vegan/Vegetarian Tomato Soup Recipe

Someone sent you a really nice backpack with your name embroidered on it. You love it!

We all liked it so much that Mommy and I are considering getting another one and using it for Holly or Logan’s diaper bag.

This weekend you and I have a very special event coming up. We’ve been invited to attend the Nashville Auto Show this weekend!

I have a feeling we’re going to have a lot of fun there; possibly getting to see cars so new they’re not even out yet.

I wonder if we’ll see anyone there that we know. Sounds like a perfect father-and-son activity for us to attend. We’ll have to take some pictures there to help expand my Instagram network: @nickshellwrites

And for your actual 5th birthday, we have something super duper special planned. With it being your last birthday as an only child, we decided to do more than just a birthday party this year…

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly or Logan: Just in Case You’re Actually a Boy…

Week 16.

Dear Holly or Logan: Just in Case You’re Actually a Boy…

Dear Holly or Logan,

I explained a few weeks ago the reasons why I’m convinced that you are a girl. That part won’t be a mystery much longer. Actually, a month from right now is when we’ll be finding out.

But I suppose I should write this letter to you today, just in the rare chance you’re actually a boy; as these next few weeks serve as the final moments for me to consider what it would be like to have another son.

This week Mommy sent me to Brilliant Sky to pick up a Christmas gift for your brother Jack. As I was walking in the toy store, I couldn’t help but notice a huge banner in the window.

It was promoting the newest character on the island of Sodor, which means he is a friend of Thomas the Train.

And of all possible names he could have, his name, is Logan.

Mommy and I decided that if you actually are a boy, it’s a given that we will buy the Logan train for you.

Last Christmas, we got your brother Jack the Jack character from Thomas the Train.

But I don’t think there’s a Holly character.

https://familyfriendlydaddyblog.com/2015/10/15/dear-holly-or-logan-why-i-think-you-are-a-girl/

It’s actually a great challenge for me to mediate on the concept of you being a boy. One thing I can imagine is this: You will instantly adopt a massive Thomas the Train collection from your brother Jack, if you are a boy.

And an even greater Hot Wheels collection!

This is the week in which I officially can tell by looking at Mommy that he absolutely, without a doubt, pregnant.

What gives it away is her stomach. It’s obvious there is a baby inside there, and that baby is you.

Just a week ago it wasn’t noticeable, but now, it’s all right there. Mommy’s pregnancy with you looks different than how she looked with your brother Jack.

That’s because, I believe, he is a boy and you… are a girl.

Love,

Daddy
