Fuller House Recaps- S1: E2, “Moving Day”

Fuller House Recaps- S1: E2, “Moving Day”

In the 2nd episode of Fuller House, Kimmy Gibbler and her about-to-be 13 year-old daughter Ramona move in.

Here’s my criticism of this episode: Clearly, the Gibblers should share the entire attic. Considering that Uncle Jesse, Aunt Rebecca, Nicky and Alex lived up there, I am confident that two people, as opposed to 4, could make the space work.

But apparently to make the plot of the show (and this episode) more interesting, DJ’s older sons Jackson and Max must now share DJ and Stephanie’s old bedroom.

This actually turns out to be a pretty funny episode though.

It’s funny how Kimmy begins a tradition of referring to DJ and Stephanie as her “sister wives.”

And I laughed pretty hard during the scene where Stephanie accidentally leaves her cell phone in the baby’s diaper.

Meanwhile, Jackson secretly hides in Uncle Jesse’s truck to apparently attempt to run away.

I love the fact Uncle Jesse drives a truck, as his personal vehicle. I’ll assume it’s a Toyota because that’s my favorite brand of trucks.

We again see the 34 year-old Stephanie acting like she never grew up past the age of 24. But now that she’s moved into the house, and having to take on responsibilities, hopefully we’ll see begin to finally grow up.

She was the character I most identified with when I was a kid, as I am only a year older than her.

So in a weird way, it’s sad to see that she didn’t grow up to be more responsible as an adult now in her mid-thirties.

I plan to make an entire recap video on Stephanie’s character, but I’ll wait until I watch all 13 episodes before I do.

But even if and when she “grows up”, there is no doubt her character had some psychological issues that held her back.

Blame it on the middle child syndrome.

Thanks for reading my Fuller House Recap. I invite you to watch  my video version as well.

Fuller House Recaps- S1: E1, “Our Very First Show, Again”

Fuller House Recaps- S1: E1, “Our Very First Show, Again”

Since Fuller House premiered on February 26th, I assume most of us tuned in to watch it on Netflix out of curiosity more than anything.

Whether the show does well or not, I have decided to do a blog series recapping each of the 13 episodes; making a video recap as well.

So let’s get started…

In the first episode, “Our Very First Show, Again,” we are transported to the modern day Tanner house, where we see a reunion of the family before they disperse to begin new careers.

My main criticism right away for Fuller House is that DJ’s husband died. I am convinced that writers for TV shows don’t believe that a happy married couple can exist on a TV show.

It also bothers me that Stephanie (who is 34 years-old) lives the lifestyle of an irresponsible 25 year-old.

At least Joey grew up, it appears: He mentions that he had moved out of the house a long time ago, and he’s wearing a wedding band so we assumed he’s married- though no one talks about his wife.

Speaking of, Danny is married, apparently to an unnamed woman.

I was surprised to see Nicky and Alex, though their parents make them out to be disappointments.

We learn that soon-to-be divorced Kimmy Gibbler has her own party planning business, while widowed DJ is a vet.

And (divorced) Steve is back, making it clear right away he’s ready to get back with DJ.

I appreciate that the writers and producers are quick to poke fun at the show and its history, while still at the same time embracing elements of former episodes.

For example, in this episode, Uncle Jesse (as well as, Stephanie) sing “Forever”.

Be sure to watch my video recap for more details. If this blog recap does well, I’ll know to keeping writing these.

Thanks for reading (and watching) today.

Elmo’s World: Elmo Wonders DVD Review: Release Date, February 2nd, 2016

Elmo’s World: Elmo Wonders DVD Review: Release Date, February 2nd, 2016

This past weekend our family was able to get our hands on Elmo’s newest DVD; Elmo’s World: Elmo Wonders, which will hit the streets on February 2nd, 2016.

Aside from the bonus features, the DVD mainly consists of episodes of Elmo’s World. I let my son Jack decided which chapters he wanted our family to watch first.

He chose the “Firefighters” episode; his favorite part was the talking fire truck puppet.

But without a doubt, my son’s favorite segment was “Jumping.” As these pictures at the bottom demonstrate, Jack decided on his own that it was vital that he began jumping like Elmo and the kids on the video.

It’s been a while since the last time Jack was watched an Elmo DVD, so it was interesting to see how we reacted to Elmo; now as a 5 year-old, compared to when Jack was a 4 year-old.

Therefore, another one of Jack’s favorite parts was when Elmo would ask the baby’s opinion on the subject.

He laughed so hard, recognizing the absurdity of asking a baby a legitimate question.

It’s interesting to see how once Jack grew past the age of Elmo (who is supposed to be around 3 and a half or 4 years old), he began to appreciate Elmo even more.

Because in theory, Jack is now in hindsight able to see the maturity level and coping skills of a younger kid, or red furry monster.

With a newborn sister scheduled to arrive in 3 months, I can see Jack becoming more away are his upcoming role as big brother. I can tell that he sees Elmo as a younger kid.

This DVD especially came in handy last weekend, as we were grounded in the middle of the blizzard. So when we weren’t playing in the snow, we could come inside and watch more Elmo.

It was a hit.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

My family has now officially been (and have remained) vegetarians for 4 years now; we converted in December 2011. (Of course, about a year after that, I went and have remained a strict vegan.)

Therefore, I feel the time is appropriate for another vegan/vegetarian post…

Seven months ago our family did a vegan/vegetarian tour of Pensacola, Florida. What we found was that Pensacola is indeed an extremely friendly area for those of us who live the alternative lifestyle of an organic, non-GMO, plant-based diet family.

Pensacola was comparable to Asheville, NC; another place we have done a vegan/vegetarian tour as a family.

However, unfortunately, Destin is absolutely not a vegan/vegetarian-friendly town.

We thought it was, as Whole Foods’ website was showing they had a store in the Destin mall.

But when we arrived, we soon learned the Whole Foods hasn’t been built yet. This was a major bummer, as we were depending on buying most of food supply there.

Our resort condo had a full kitchen, so the plan was to cook most of our meals there. Without a Whole Foods, this was much more difficult.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

At first, we thought we had a saving grace in that Destin has a Fresh Market. Not so much.

I was officially disappointed as their foods were highly processed; even containing artificial colors made from petroleum.

We bought a few things there, but ultimately, we quickly learned that we would have to compromise in eating non-organic, GMO grown food.

To my surprise, one of the places that actually helped save the situation was Chipotle; where they openly promoted their non-GMO food. They even had a special vegan tofu option for my burrito!

We also made a visit to For the Health of It for some smoothies.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

Ultimately, though, the current plant-based score of Destin, as a whole, is extremely low. It’s comparable to just any other town that has chain restaurants.

You learn this the moment you Google “vegan restaurants Destin.”

A few of the restaurant choices were based on my son.

We took him to The Pancakery for a special M&M pancake for his 5th birthday. He loved it!

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

I special ordered off-menu a veggie burrito, but for the price and the size of it, I definitely was missing Whole Foods!

As much as I hate to admit it, because I love Jimmy Buffett so much, my wife and I were similarly disappointed at Margaritaville.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

It was the first time we’d ever been to Jimmy Buffett’s theme restaurant. I must admit that the staff was extremely accommodating as to helping us figure out what we could eat there; as they did have a special vegetarian menu already printed up.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

My wife is a vegetarian so it was easier for her to order. But for me, as a strict vegan, I had to explicitly explain what vegan means: no dairy, no milk, no butter, no eggs…

Ultimately I paid $17 for a few grilled veggies and pasta.

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

Again, the staff was nothing but helpful. However, it become obvious that as a chain restaurant that likely depends on Sysco (like nearly all chain restaurants), I assume their food was canned, boxed, and GMO; which is what is served in most prisons and public school systems, to my understanding.

My son was perfectly happy though. It was because of his birthday day that we were actually there. He had the $7 mac-and-cheese; which the waiter admitted was just a box of Kraft (which contains food dye made from petroleum).

Destin, Florida is Definitely Not (Yet) a Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly Town

We also paid another $6 for him to have to special battery-operated light up cup, filled with a cocktail of more food dye, as well as high fructose corn syrup.

Granted, when you go to a themed restaurant, you’re paying for the environment more than you are the food.

And I must admit, we definitely appreciated sitting right there on the Gulf of Mexico, with open windows looking out on to the harbor; while Jimmy Buffet’s music played.

Plus, the waiter brought my son some ice cream, knowing it was his birthday.

But the whole drive home my wife and I felt so horrible that we had just paid over $60 for that meal. (We tipped well there, as we did a The Pancakery; as we do not hold it against the individual establishment or its servers just because they’re not truly equipped for a plant-based family.)

Our experience with Margaritaville would have been the same way at pretty much any themed restaurant. We could went to the Rainforest Café and I’m confident my review would be the same.

Here’s the bottom line: Our family loves Destin. We will absolutely be going back the next chance we get.

But first, we are going to wait for that new Whole Foods to be built. That will take care of the issues we experienced.

Because then we can have a go-to restaurant as well as a trustworthy place to buy our groceries to cook meals back at the resort condo.

As for now, though, Destin is definitely not (yet) a vegan/vegetarian-friendly town.

Dear Jack: We Went on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

5 years.

Dear Jack: You Got to Go on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

Dear Jack,

In addition to you being able to pet and feed the dolphins at the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, another really fun thing our family was able to do last week while on your “destination birthday party” in Destin was we sailed on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise.

What the event personally revealed to me was that I could probably be out on a ship all day long every day and be completely happy.

Dear Jack: You Got to Go on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

But it’s even better when you have an experienced captain give you a tour of where all the dolphins hang out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Basically, whenever anyone on the ship thought they saw a dolphin, the captain steered in that direction, so everyone could get a closer look.

For about 2 hours, that’s what we did. And it was awesome! Not to mention, it was so relaxing being out on the water.

Dear Jack: You Got to Go on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

Once we got out there, the captain gave you kids an opportunity to feed the seagulls… that was hilarious!

Plus, we even saw a bride and groom across the water on a different ship.

Dear Jack: You Got to Go on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

Part of the adventure of the cruse was the mystery of it. The captain explained at the beginning of our voyage that each time is different; he never knows exactly when or where the dolphins are going to appear.

I thought it was really cool how the captain depends on audience participation for the dolphin cruise to come alive.

Dear Jack: You Got to Go on the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise in Destin!

Near the end of our voyage, the captain gave an opportunity for all the kids to be able to get in line to sail the ship with him.

Captain Jack sailed the ship safely back to shore tonight.

You couldn’t get enough! You totally were in the zone as you held onto the wheel. I Instagrammed the event:

The captain even wrote out a special award for you, making you an honorary captain!

Afterwards, you got to pick some toys from the treasure chest.

We were so pleased with the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise. It’s a completely worthwhile experience and I absolutely recommend it to any families staying in the Destin, Florida area while on vacation.

Love,

Daddy
