Dear Jack: Combining Beyblades and Jenga Blocks Was a Good Idea

7 years, 9 months.

I didn’t even know what a Beyblade was until about 2 weeks ago. But now you have 3 of them.

And this past weekend you literally spent hours spinning these little propelled tops across the kitchen floor, attempting to crash down Jenga towers that you would build.

It’s the kind of self-invented activity I love to see on a Sunday afternoon. And even when you finally got ready to change things up, you learned that the Jenga blocks make perfect dominoes.

Your sister even took notice and decided to make a bed for some of her smaller stuffed animals.

Good thing Mommy suggested you go through the closet and find a game to play. You made the original Jenga even better!

Dear Jack,

Love,

Daddy

We are Going to Disney on Ice Frozen in Nashville at The Bridgestone Arena in September 2018… Are You?

From September 13th to September 16th, families in driving distance of Nashville will have 9 different opportunities to see Disney On Ice Frozen.

As for my own family, we will be at the very first show that Thursday night.

With a 2 year-old daughter and a 2nd grader son, I know we are going to have a great time!

And for congratulations to Karen Stanley, who was the first person to leave a comment about Disney on Ice Frozen on the Facebook page for Family Friendly Daddy Blog. She won 4 complimentary tickets for her family to join us there.

Dear Jack: 2nd Grade is a Good Year for a Venus Fly Trap

7 years, 9 months.

Dear Jack,

I remember how exactly 30 years ago when I was in 2nd grade, I wanted and received a Venus Fly Trap. It’s the perfect science project/pet for a boy approaching his 8th birthday.

And the plant only cost us $5 at Kroger!

All last weekend, you enjoyed catching flies and small spiders to toss into the hungriest mouths of the Venus Fly Trap.

Something you taught me is that if any of the “heads” sets sick and turns brown, we can just got it off, and then a new one will grow back in its place!

That’s so fascinating. I had no idea.

I have my doubts about how long we’ll be able to keep the Venus Fly Trap alive, but for just 5 bucks, and with so much entertainment so far, I’d say this is been a great investment for a smart 2nd grade boy like yourself.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You Love Your New Minnie Mouse High Tops! (No Socks Required)

2 years, 4 months.

Dear Holly,

To a 2 year-old little girl, Minnie Mouse high tops are the perfect shoe choice for any occasion. If we’re going outside in the cul-de-sac to play with hula hoops, then you wear you them.

If it’s time to go to bed to sleep for the night, you wear them.

If Mommy has already dressed you in your sandals to match your dress before it’s time to take you to school, you wear your Minnie Mouse high tops anyway; because to me, it’s not worth the fight.

They’re the perfect shoes for you. They contain all the important elements:

They’re pink. They have bows on them. And most importantly, they have Minnie Mouse on them!

You are so eager to wear these shoes that most of the time, you are in such a rush that you refuse to even wear socks with them.

Personally, I would hate the though of wearing high tops, without socks, while running around outside or sleeping.

But those small details don’t bother you one bit.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Please Do Not Bring Anymore Snails to the Dinner Table!

7 years, 9 months.

Dear Jack,

Immediately following the events of your frozen custard breakfast last Sunday morning, you suggested to your sister, “Hey Holly, you want to go outside to the back porch and catch some bugs?”

With absolutely no hesitation, your sister responded like she had just heard the most clever idea ever:

“YEAH!!!”

So while Mommy was upstairs handling the laundry that I had just carried up, I supervised the two of you downstairs.

It didn’t take much time at all for you to find a little black spider, which you temporarily captured using the clear container you got slime in the day before.

About that time, your sister decided she was ready to come back inside; as you were pretty quick to follow, seeing all the action was all moving back into the house.

You announced to Mommy as she just happened to be coming back down the stairs:

“Hey Mommy, look… I caught a snail. It’s right here!”

(This was the first I was hearing about the snail, too.)

Her response easily sums up the theme of you being a 2nd grader right now:

“Jack, please do not bring anymore snails to the dinner table!”

Mommy and I then reminded you that snails are especially nasty creatures and that we don’t want their germs in our kitchen where we sit down to eat our meals.

However, I am willing to admit that snails are a delicacy in France.

But we don’t live in France. We live in a house where Mommy makes the rules when it comes to cleanliness and I make the rules regarding discipline.

It’s like Law and Order: Parenting Edition.

So while we both can greatly appreciate your passion for science and The Great Outdoors, it’s important not to bring that science from The Great Outdoors indoors.

Love,

Daddy
