Dear Holly: Our Living Room is Your Personal Gym

5 years, 9 months.

Dear Holly,

I suppose I was distracted by getting dinner prepped. That must explain why I didn’t even notice you bring out a yoga mat and hand weights, while wearing a sweatband around your forehead.

You had been doing sit ups with the weights for a few sets before I even processed what you were doing.

And there was no agenda of yours to bring attention to yourself. No, “Hey everybody, look at me!”

It was completely your idea to entertain yourself- and no one else.

No suggestions whatsoever from Mommy or me. You have turned our living room into your own personal gym and fitness studio.

You have to keep yourself busy and moving.

Most days it’s running across the floor, practicing what you learn at gymnastics.

And every night now before you go to bed, instead of reading you a story like I used to, you require me to throw you, and I mean throw you, into your bed at least five times.

You like to move it, move it.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You’re Planning Your 6th Birthday Party, Which is Still 3 Months Away

5 years, 9 months.

Dear Holly,

For the past few weekends now, you have begun planning out your upcoming 6th birthday party.

And by upcoming, I mean… 3 months from now.

You started a list of all the activities you want to plan for all you and your friends to enjoy.

My personal favorite is “Twizzlers”.

That’s just it’s own event.

You all get to eat Twizzlers.

Because when you’re 5 going on 6… Yeah, that’s an event all in itself.

But specifically, here are the  birthday activities you’ve got on your list, so far- in what I’m assuming in chronological order:

  1. Gifts
  2. Cake
  3. Ice Cream
  4. Pizza
  5. Popcorn
  6. M&M’s
  7. Goldfish
  8. Apples
  9. Twizzlers
  10. Toys

Gifts first, of course. Pizza after ice cream? Sure, why not!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You Won a Medal at Gymnastics This Week!

5 years, 8 months.

Dear Holly,

This Tuesday, you won a medal in your gymnastics class- and you have been so proud ever since!

You insisted the next morning that you be able to wear it to school.

Your brother had some reservations that you might lose it during the school day, but I figured if it meant that much to you to show it to your teachers and friends, it would be worth the risk.

And you’ve worn it every day since!

It makes me so happy to see how hard you work at what you love!

Great job, Holly!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: I Finally Was Able to See You at Gymnastics!

5 years, 7 months.

Dear Holly,

When this school year started, you began gymnastics and your brother started Taekwondo. Mommy always been the one to take you to gymnastics, which happens to be at the same time as when I am taking your brother to Taekwondo.

But this week, it worked out better for me to take you instead. You being in gymnastics makes a lot of sense!

You are very energetic and daring. So for an hour, twice a week, you get to run and jump, and challenge yourself- specifically with the balance beam.

As much as I loved watching you in your dance recital earlier this year, I definitely see how gymnastics could be the better fit for you… at least for now.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You are Still Planning on Marrying Brooks, From Preschool

5 years, 7 months.

Dear Holly,

Seven months ago, when you were finishing up preschool, is when I became well aware of your boyfriend (?) Brooks from your class.

He even said right in front of me one time, “Holly, remember… I’m going to marry you one day!”

Well even though you’re halfway through Kindergarten now (a different one than him), you still haven’t forgotten what he said- despite not seeing him since August.

In the mornings before school, you often like to draw pictures. This week, you drew one that made it to the fridge; as it proclaims, “Brooks and Holly Get Married.”

This is going to be hilarious if you and Brooks ever cross paths again. I don’t even know his last name!

Love,

Daddy
