Dear Jack: Why Your Teacher At Rainbow Child Care Center Is Awesome

Dear Jack,

You have been attending your new school, Rainbow Child Care Center, for a month now. I’m assuming it’s been pretty obvious in my recent letters how happy our family is with you attending there.

Today, I want take a moment to “feature your teacher”, Ms. Aimee.

She is truly exceptional. She is the ideal teacher I could hope for, working at the ideal school I could hope for you to attend.

Last week she taught you to use a hammer, a real hammer, to build a tiny house, which is currently being displayed in our wine cabinet.

Consider how atypical it is that a 4 year-old gets to build something out of wood, using a real hammer, at his preschool. That is so cool you get to do that.

And this week, Ms. Aimee started teaching you and your friends how to use a sewing machine. I love the super serious look on your face in this picture as you were working on your patch.

Montessori

This is a quick note she sent me about it:

Here are photos of Jack using a sewing machine for the first time! He observed a couple friends do it first, then, became very eager to try. After learning some of the rules (ie: always watch your fingers) he was a sewing pro! He picked out his fabric, and slowly guided it through the sewing machine. After he was done, he loved showing his project off!

These examples demonstrate not only how much creative control that Rainbow Child Care Center gives their teachers, which I extremely appreciate, but also how creative and talented your teacher is.

To me, that’s all the “Montessori” revealing itself.

Plus, it’s pretty revolutionary and unique that Rainbow Child Care Centers have a kids gym in them, so you are able to physically play- despite the weather.

Montessori

I can see that every day at your school, you are being creatively and intellectually challenged.

Ms. Aimee inspires you. Because of her, you are now fascinated with pet reptiles and amphibians, since Ms. Aimee has 4 of them in your classroom. I imagine not many 4 year-old boys get to have 4 pet reptiles and amphibians in their preschool classroom as class pets!

It’s no surprise that we bought tickets for Repticon for the weekend after next. I can’t wait to see how much you’re going to enjoy it.

Mommy and I even bought you a gecko stuffed animal as part of your upcoming Easter basket.

After learning some of the rules (ie: always watch your fingers) he was a sewing pro! He picked out his fabric, and slowly guided it through the sewing machine. Oh, and your class recently won a pajama party due to good behavior. It was a big deal to you!

I obviously recommend Rainbow Child Care Center to any parent who is considering enrolling their child there.

It is a perfect fit for our family and lifestyle.

Love,

Daddy

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

Last week I revealed that my wife and I sold our townhouse after it was on the market for just 3 days; for more than our asking price. See Dear Jack: We Sold Our Townhouse… It’s Official! Thank The Lord!

And yes, we made a profit. Today, I would like to highlight what enabled that to happen.

I have to start off with what is, for me, the most obvious part of it: God orchestrated all the events I’m about to talk about.

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

#1: We prayed for the right people to find our house. More important than focusing our prayers on our house selling for our personal benefit in our time, we focused on the future buyers being blessed by finding it. That way, they would know our home was the right one once they found it. Here’s an email excerpt from the buyer of our townhouse:

“As for selling points these are the things that really sold us: Open concept, large bedrooms, more bang for your buck with a townhouse versus detached home, safe neighborhood close to entertainment and work, reasonable HOA fees. The extra half bath was also huge; huge garden tub and double vanity in the bathroom.

We looked at 2 others. One was unimpressive and we actually put in an offer on another one that was an end unit. It was a blessing in disguise that we missed out on it because this home really is so much more perfect for us.”

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

#2: We had an excellent real estate agent. I have known Dave Stanley with Reliant Reality for most of the time I have lived here in Nashville, since 2005. He is assertive and calculated. He went through the process of figuring out exactly the perfect price point for our model in our neighborhood. We actually received more than our asking price for our townhouse which set a new record for that model in our neighborhood.

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

#3: We had kept our house immaculately clean. I mean this as a compliment to my wife: She is obsessed with cleaning to the same degree as Monica from Friends. We don’t smoke, we don’t have pets, and we clean everything weekly. Here is another excerpt from the buyer:

“The fact that [your home] came from what looked like a good family who kept it very clean and up to date was huge. At least 50% of our decision if not more.”

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

#4: We staged our home well. It went on the market in October, so we made sure we set out a pumpkin, as well as seasonal flowers, in our staged home. As for the bigger stuff, my dad and I put in a backsplash in the kitchen (seen in the picture above, where I had my smoothie station set up). Not to mention, we painted some of the rooms to bring them to life, but not that same dark red color that most people in the neighborhood used: Another email excerpt from the buyer:

“YES! I totally forgot to mention the backsplash. This was the only house we saw that had a backsplash. That really set the house apart from the rest. I can’t believe I forgot that! It’s one of my favorite features!… We [also] really liked the paint y’all had which made the transition easy.”

5 Reasons Our Townhouse Sold In Just 3 Days

#5: We were debt-free when we put the house on the market. Like most “normal” young couples, we were tens of thousands of dollars in debt for the first several years of our marriage. Thanks to following Dave Ramsey, on our 5th wedding anniversary we official paid off our final debt (as seen when I originally posted about it on my corporately sponsored blog, The Dadabase on Parents.com). That enabled us to be better prepared financially for when we found our new home. Had we not been debt-free, the time would not have been right for us to be able to afford a bigger home when we did; taking advantage of a good deal when we saw it. Additionally, we were able to put our townhouse on the market when the market was ready; not simply just when we were ready.

Hopefully our experience in selling our home in just 3 days for more than the asking price can help you. Individual results may vary.

Dear Jack: We Sold Our Townhouse... It's Official!

Dear Jack,

The pictures you see here are not totally recent… they are from December 1st, 2014; more than 2 and a half months ago.

I’ve been hinting that we sold our townhouse. But for me, there just wasn’t closure with the story:

We were waiting on a reimbursement from taxes that we accidentally double paid, which ultimately was the profit we made from selling our townhouse.

Well, that check arrived in the mail last week; about three weeks after moving into our new home. Closure has now arrived.

I don’t want to portray this story lightly. I consider it a miracle of God that it happened the way it did:

After just 3 days on the market, our real estate agent, Dave Stanley with Reliant Realty, informed us that a nice young couple bought our townhouse from us. And we didn’t have to simply break even to sell it.

We had been praying that God would bring the right people to our townhouse. I believe God prepared them in their lives to see our townhouse when they did. (And it turns out, all the little upgrades we had been working on, like repainting the walls, and adding the backsplash, actually impressed them. They also liked our clean we kept it.)

To me, this is miraculous because it was mostly wishful thinking on our part that we would actually be able to sell it (especially for a profit) before we moved into our new house.

Dear Jack: We Sold Our Townhouse... It's Official!

I was miserably prepared to become a landlord for the next couple of years.

Instead, we don’t have to worry about it anymore!

Our townhouse was great for what we needed it for when Mommy and I first got married. It was our brand new starter home.

And now, I am so grateful to know it went to a good home.

No, wait… that doesn’t make sense. What I meant to say was, I am grateful to know that our good home went to such good new owners.

I am so happy to be where we are in life. As I’ve said it before, we worked very hard to get where we are today.

It’s not that things are just handed to Mommy and me. But every once in a while, people like us get a break.

And our townhouse selling (for a profit) in 3 days to happy new owners is definitely one of those breaks for us. Thank the Lord!

The townhouse chapter in our life is now complete. Right on time.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Mellow Mushroom In Downtown Franklin, TN

Dear Jack,

Last Friday after work, I drove straight to Mellow Mushroom in downtown Franklin; which is only about 20 minutes from our new house.

Grandma wanted to take our family out to dinner to help celebrate us moving in our new home.

I suggested Mellow Mushroom, already familiar with the idea that it was “vegan friendly,” though we hadn’t eaten there since I became a vegan nearly 2 years ago.

Turns out, it was one of the best meals I’ve had eating out at in a long time. I was pleasantly delighted to be there; and so were you!

You enjoyed getting to see “the Mushroom Man,” who was made completely out of spare car parts.

I liked their kids’ menu. You ordered a cheese pizza with a side order of steamed broccoli… which you ate all of.

As for me, I had a delectable vegan pizza which came with vegan cheese, tofu, and plenty of veggies.

Plus, I’ve never been to a Mellow Mushroom when the service wasn’t perfect. The staff is always so helpful, yet laid back.

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Mellow Mushroom In Downtown Franklin, TN

I almost forgot… Mellow Mushroom is where Mommy and I went to dinner the night I proposed to her!

Back in January 2008, I had planned to propose at Saffire restaurant at the Franklin Factory, where we had first met. However, the day of, I found out that restaurant was closed on Monday’s.

So we had dinner at that same Mellow Mushroom there in downtown Franklin, then we drove to the Franklin Factory, where Mommy said yes when I proposed.

While we’re obviously not new to Mellow Mushroom, now that we are a plant-based family I feel that we have now discovered our official go-to eat-out restaurant closest to our new home.

Obviously, you know we don’t go out often, but when we do on special occasions, I’d be fine with going to Mellow Mushroom every time. We’re actually going back this Saturday night for a fun, family Valentine’s dinner!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

Dear Jack,

Now that we’ve officially lived in our new house in Spring Hill for a full week now, I realize the importance of specifying what events take place in Nashville; which is 35 miles away from where we live.

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

With that being said, yesterday we went to the glorious Pinewood Social in Nashville.

We went to lunch with Mommy’s boss, his wife, and Grandma (Mommy’s mother) who is in town this week (from Sacramento) this week to help us unpack.

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

The way I would describe Pinewood Social is that it’s a classy, upscale, hip, “new Nashville” restaurant with a subtle 1950’s flare.

They even had vegan options for your Daddy: I had a Thai veggie sandwich; along with fried green tomatoes and fried broccoli which our table shared.

Mommy’s boss made a point to pull me aside to express to me how impressed he was that for the whole hour while we were at the table, you were perfectly behaved.

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

It’s moments like that where I feel confirmation in knowing that the way Mommy and I are raising you, with limited TV time and no access to artificial colors or flavors in food, is paying off.

(We didn’t really let you watch TV at all until you were 2 years old.)

Dear Jack: Our Visit To Pinewood Social In Nashville, Tennessee

You were simply content and behaved the whole time there at Pinewood Social, completely occupied by drawing pictures of our family on sticky notes provided by your new preschool you are starting next week.

Eventually, you caught a glimpse of the bowling alley, which is part of the restaurant. So you spent a good 20 minutes bowling, with the help of the kiddy ramp.

I was amazed you were able to pick up that standard size bowling ball yourself.

On your last turn, you got your first strike!

Obviously, we had a great time at Pinewood Social. I have a feeling you’re going to ask to go back…

Love,

Daddy
