Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A Preschool Near Our New House

4 years, 1 month.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Dear Jack,

There are certain assumptions that might arise, with our upcoming move into our new house on January 29th. (That’s the official close date, still Lord willin’.)

One common assumption that people have been asking me is if there will finally be a possibilty of open-mindedness on your parents’ part for our family expanding. To be clear, I’m not hinting any sort of announcement; I am simply saying it wasn’t an option before now.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Who knows? Maybe with a new house in a new city with a new lifestyle for our family, there may be room for… that possibility.

Or maybe I’ll never mention it again.

Another assumption is that we’ll be sending you to a new school, just around the corner from our new house. That would save you from having to be in the car with me a total of 2 hours every day.

Instead, it would be more like 2 minutes.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Not only is that better for your safety, but it’s better for quality time with Mommy.

Here’s why: Where you go to school right now is right next to where I work. But with us moving at least 15 miles south of where I work now (and about 35 miles south of where Mommy works) it’s not really a benefit anymore that your current school is near where I work.

Not to mention, with the move, Mommy’s schedule will be altered to where she can go in to work early and leave work early, meaning that you and Mommy will be able to spend a decent amount of extra quality time together soon, on a regulary basis.

And that’s so important! For that reason alone, it’s worth it to find you a new preschool. Again, there’s nothing at all wrong with your current school, but moving you to one closer to our new home so you can be in the car less and with Mommy more…. those aspects are more important to our family.

There are 3 really nice schools near our new home. We liked Spring Hill Academy, a Christian place, but they don’t have any openings for you right now.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

So now with that one easily eliminated, that leaves us with two main contenders: Primrose Schools and Rainbow Child Care Center.

We drove up to the parking lots of both of them this weekend while reviewing the 2015 Hyundai Sonatajust to get an idea of the drive time from our new home.

Mommy is taking you to visit them both this week, during open business hours. I wonder where you’ll end up. They’re both wonderful schools, from everything Mommy and I have researched.

Of course, whichever school wins your tuition also wins reoccuring free publicity here on Family Friendly Daddy Blog, as the new school will serve as part of the setting for our family’s narrative.

Just this week, I wrote both Dear Jack: The Glory Of Classic American Holiday Sweaters and Dear Jack: The Lego Hospital You Built At Your School; both of which took place at your current school.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Where we send you to school is a big deal to us. In fact, much of the incentive to move out of our townhouse was to get into a better county where we could get you into a better school.

When you live in Nashville, it matters to your education and future based on where you go to school; unlike where the small town where I grew up; where there was just one school.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack,

It was important to Mommy and I that we had your 4th birthday party (nearly a month ago now) at a unique place. Having it in Bricks 4 Kidz (a Lego play center) was definitely the right decision for us!

Turns out, your friend Jacob, who was very present in the letters I wrote to you about your own birthday party, had his 5th birthday party this past weekend at the tractor store his Daddy owns.

Dear Jack: Jacob’s 5th Birthday Party In A Tractor Store (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

Mommy stayed home and took care of some things back home, as you and I had a “dadventure” to his party.

You were able to take advantage of the DVD player on the Lexus RX 450h. Coincidently, you happened to be watching a birthday episode of the Berenstain Bears.

I am confident to say that it was one of the most unique birthday parties we’ve ever been to. Right when you came in the door, you got a Nerf dart gun as a party favor.

That’s right. Everyone who attended got their own dart gun, along with safety goggles. How cool!

The tractor store was set up as a shooting range for you and your friends.

However, your favorite part of Jacob’s party was the balloon room. Yes, just a small room full of 150 balloons.

You had a ball… literally!

Actually, you were the first one in the balloon room, but it didn’t take long before Jacob came in and joined the organized chaos, along with several other friends.

Even your teacher Ms. Michelle was there!

Towards the end of the party, Jacob’s daddy pulled up in a bulldozer and dropped off some snow for you and your friends to play in. Seriously, how awesome is that?

I loved watch you and all your friends run to the snow!

And nearby, there was also a tractor that showered bubbles into the air for you to pop.

You and I had a great time together on our dadventure. I can’t wait to test out that dart gun with you in our new house!

Love,

Daddy

Is Facebook Itself Technically A Social Video Game?

I think it will be difficult for me to ever look at Facebook the same way again…

extreme close-up selfie

Back in February while researching for Rock Music Used To Be Rebellious, Now It’s Rap Music Instead, my friend Sam Royalty simply stated this to me in a side conversation about social media:

“People use Facebook status updates and pictures to find validation in their ideas and life choices.”

The more I’ve thought about it, the more it makes sense.

When I consider the selfie alone, it only makes sense that the “selfie taker” is looking for some kind of validation from their corner of society that their appearance is… relevant.

I say “relevant” because that could mean a lot of things depending on what the person is needing slight reassurance of:

Am I pretty enough? Do I look cool? Can people tell I’ve gotten in shape? Am I still funny? Am I even interesting?

With that being said, it goes beyond just the pictures we post. It transcends to our status updates and shared as well:

Am I doing a good job of being informative in society? Am I an influencer? Is the world aware I am part of it?

Is Facebook Itself Technically A Social Video Game?

I would never want to be seen as the kind of person who is known for “needing attention” all the time, yet there’s this subtle paradox that says if you don’t post enough on Facebook, you’re sort of a Facebook snob who only looks at other people’s info and pictures without contributing or getting involved aside from “liking” other people’s post or very generically wishing them happy birthday after being prompted to by Facebook itself.

My theory is that those people who apparently don’t need confirmation or validation are at least looking for inspiration or, for a few minutes, to live vicariously as someone else.

Of course, I believe if you’re too inspirational, you may appear as a show-off. You don’t want your Facebook friends thinking you trying you’re, in essence, “trying too hard to win” at this unofficial game of Facebook.

Despite the daily overdose of negativity on Facebook, there is a fraction of my news feed that is actually positive; or at least neutrally interesting or fun. Like the pictures of my friends’ families: those are the posts I scroll my feed for.

More importantly, I try to be the person who is contributing those pictures, links, and status updates; just like Gandhi famously said:

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

I really don’t think there’s truly a way to “win at Facebook,” sort of like the game Animal Crossings that I loved so much in college on Nintendo GameCube. Ultimately, to someone out there on Facebook, you’re going to contribute too much or too little; seem too showy or too aloof.

You can’t necessarily win or lose at the game of Facebook, but it’s a video game that millions of people play all day long, all over the world.

Video Games: The Movie

In theory, it’s the most popular and relevant video game of all time; that’s an idea proposed in the Netflix documentary, Video Games: The Movie.

But for this modern tower of Babel we have built and participate in, I say this is ultimately why we show up to it:

To give and/or receive legitimate validation, confirmation, and/or inspiration.

The reason I say legitimate is because not all ideas on Facebook should merit reinforcement. Plus, as I recognized earlier, Facebook has its fair share of negative people who would rather attempt to hurt instead of edify others.

Overall though, Facebook is a place (and/or social video game) where essentially anyone can give or receive confirmation on one’s beauty, worth, and relevance.

I can even post an “extreme close-up selfie” and I will get what I want out of it: for people to recognize the humor in it.

And no, I’m not writing this to get more “likes” on my Facebook page, or to try to prove I am a decent writer, or to simply feel validated by my Facebook friends so that I can essentially score more points in this video game we’re all playing.

Or am I?

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

4 years.

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

Dear Jack,

We had not seen the progress on our new home since your 4th birthday two weeks ago. So it was really exciting to see our driveway has now been poured, along with the sidewalk in front of our house; as well as leading up to the front door.

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

But the bigger surprise was seeing that a back porch has been added on to our house!

Built into the price we are paying was supposed to be a 5×5 foot concrete slab to put patio furniture on.

Instead, they built us a 12×12 back porch.

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

I suppose it had something to do with the land not being level enough for the originally intended patio. Granted, we’d rather have a back porch anyway.

The way I see it, it’s technically like having a 5th bedroom, or a 2nd bonus room!

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

Mommy and I are planning on buying a fire pit for the backyard. We truly want to have bonfires on a regular basis, especially in the summer and fall.

Now, we will have a back porch to add to the fun!

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

Our marble countertops for our bathrooms are now in, which I am proud to see are made in America.

While I carried you around the house, Mommy measured for the Roman Shades we are considering putting up in the windows.

Dear Jack: Our Driveway And Surprise Back Porch

Other points of progress we noticed include the trim being painted and the automatic garage door opener being installed.

In the meantime, our family has officially been moved out of our townhome for a week now, as we’ve begun living with some friends for the next couple of months until our new house is finished.

And I plan to have more exciting news about all this within the week, but we’ll have to see how things go…

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

4 years.

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

Dear Jack,

Back in August, while reviewing the 2015 Cadillac Escalade on a road trip back to Nonna and Papa’s house, I let you inherit one of my old Transformers from 1985; his name is Blitzwing.

Turns out, I was 4 years old back in 1985, and you just turned 4 a few weeks ago. It was simply inevitable you would spend some of your birthday money on your very own Transformer.

It sweetened the deal that in addition to receiving a gift card to Toys “R” Us, the store also sent you a $5 off coupon. A few days before the purchase, I even used my lunch break to make sure they had in stock the one you wanted…

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

So after a weekend of you diligently helping Mommy and I finalize moving the rest of our stuff out of our townhome and moving it into storage, and spending our last night in our townhome this past weekend, we decided to let you buy your very first Transformer.

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

For weeks now, you’ve had your eye on a blue and green Dinobot named Slash.

Immediately once we walked into the Transformer aisle at Toys “R” Us, you screamed, “That’s him!”

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

I happened to notice they had a reissue of Blitzwing (the one I gave you from my childhood), as well as Bumblebee, who you also are crazy about.

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

But you didn’t flinch, Slash the Dinobot it was!

You practiced transforming him all the next day, even in the dark. By the next day at school, you were able to instantly transform Slash for your teacher Ms. Michelle.

I was also proud of you for so willingly sharing him with your friends at school. I could tell you were happy to show him off.

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

Something tells me this is the first of many Transformers to come. After all, this is your 1985; the year that Transformers became extremely relevant for me.

Now, as for our family moving out of our townhome, and why so quickly, I’ve got more to tell you, but not today.

Dear Jack: Your Very 1st Transformer/We’ve Now Moved Out Of Our Townhome

Maybe next week…

Love,

Daddy
