Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A Preschool Near Our New House

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Dear Jack,

There are certain assumptions that might arise, with our upcoming move into our new house on January 29th. (That’s the official close date, still Lord willin’.)

One common assumption that people have been asking me is if there will finally be a possibilty of open-mindedness on your parents’ part for our family expanding. To be clear, I’m not hinting any sort of announcement; I am simply saying it wasn’t an option before now.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Who knows? Maybe with a new house in a new city with a new lifestyle for our family, there may be room for… that possibility.

Or maybe I’ll never mention it again.

Another assumption is that we’ll be sending you to a new school, just around the corner from our new house. That would save you from having to be in the car with me a total of 2 hours every day.

Instead, it would be more like 2 minutes.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Not only is that better for your safety, but it’s better for quality time with Mommy.

Here’s why: Where you go to school right now is right next to where I work. But with us moving at least 15 miles south of where I work now (and about 35 miles south of where Mommy works) it’s not really a benefit anymore that your current school is near where I work.

Not to mention, with the move, Mommy’s schedule will be altered to where she can go in to work early and leave work early, meaning that you and Mommy will be able to spend a decent amount of extra quality time together soon, on a regulary basis.

And that’s so important! For that reason alone, it’s worth it to find you a new preschool. Again, there’s nothing at all wrong with your current school, but moving you to one closer to our new home so you can be in the car less and with Mommy more…. those aspects are more important to our family.

There are 3 really nice schools near our new home. We liked Spring Hill Academy, a Christian place, but they don’t have any openings for you right now.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

So now with that one easily eliminated, that leaves us with two main contenders: Primrose Schools and Rainbow Child Care Center.

We drove up to the parking lots of both of them this weekend while reviewing the 2015 Hyundai Sonatajust to get an idea of the drive time from our new home.

Mommy is taking you to visit them both this week, during open business hours. I wonder where you’ll end up. They’re both wonderful schools, from everything Mommy and I have researched.

Of course, whichever school wins your tuition also wins reoccuring free publicity here on Family Friendly Daddy Blog, as the new school will serve as part of the setting for our family’s narrative.

Just this week, I wrote both Dear Jack: The Glory Of Classic American Holiday Sweaters and Dear Jack: The Lego Hospital You Built At Your School; both of which took place at your current school.

Dear Jack: Primrose Vs. Rainbow- Finding A School Near Our New House

Where we send you to school is a big deal to us. In fact, much of the incentive to move out of our townhouse was to get into a better county where we could get you into a better school.

When you live in Nashville, it matters to your education and future based on where you go to school; unlike where the small town where I grew up; where there was just one school.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Meeting Santa With Sophie At Bass Pro Shop (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

4 years, 1 month.

Dear Jack,

Two years ago, when you had just turned 2, Mommy and I took you to go meet Santa Claus for the first time at the Bass Pro Shop in Nashville.

Last year you expressed zero interest in seeing Santa again, so we let you off the hook.

I've been wondering all weekend why Jack asked Santa for a pinball machine. In fact, it was the only thing he asked Santa for. Today when I picked Jack up from school, I learned why. His teacher Ms. Michelle created one for their class to play with. Now to figure out how I'm going to arrange that with Santa. Time for me to start Googling "small pinball machines"...

But this year, your best friend Sophie just happened to be visiting Nashville again since she moved nearly a year ago, in February.

As expected, you brought your illuminating sword we had bought you the night before at Marvel Universe Live. Just as appropriate on her end, Sophie brought her Anna doll.

I enjoyed watching the two you play together in front of the fish tank with your gender-specific toys.

Having still an hour to go before your appointment with Santa, we decided to hang out at the Lexus RX 450h that our family was reviewing this week.

With Sophie’s 4th birthday on December 21st, we decided to give her both her birthday and Christmas gifts there in the back of the Lexus; which sort of transformed into a stage, as we parents watched the endearing entertainment.

Your birthday gift to Sophie was very special; a penguin from Whole Foods- the exact same one as you have, who you named Pingy.

We still had a solid 30 minutes or so after, so we headed back into Bass Pro Shop to check out the activities for kids; like coloring funny pictures, racing cars, engineering trains, and “hunting.”

When it came time to go see Santa, we learned that Sophie is troubled by gloves; she just doesn’t like them.

So I explained to Santa and he agreed to remove them for the picture, which he gladly agreed to as he did his best to hide the confused look in his eyes and as I tried not to laugh. Notice the picture below of him removing them…

As you can see from the picture at the very top, Santa was wearing no gloves for the picture of you and Sophie on his lap.

And of all random things, the one and only thing you asked Santa for was… a pinball machine.

Yes, a pinball machine. Granted, our new house is going to have more space than our town house that we’ve been living in all these years, but still, I don’t think you’re exactly sure of what a pinball machine really is.

Turns out, I learned that last week your teacher Ms. Michelle created a pinball machine concept for your class to play with. So that’s where you got the idea. Now to figure out how I’m going to arrange that with Santa. Time for me to start Googling “small pinball machines”…

Fun and unforgettable memories were made, that’s for sure. And if it all works out, we’ll be visiting Sophie again the day after Christmas, while reviewing another Lexus.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

4 years.

Dear Jack,

Having visited the Wizard World Atlanta Comic Con this past June in Atlanta and seen all the Marvel characters there, Mommy and I decided it would be a good decision for our family to drive the luxurious Lexus RX 450h to downtown Nashville this past weekend to see Marvel Universe Live!

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

Even though we live in Nashville, as a family we only visit downtown a few times per year. So I took advantage of using the GPS to remind myself how to get to the Bridgestone Arena, while we all listened to classic Christmas tunes on Sirius XM.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

I am pleased to say that the show was completely appropriate and relevant for you; having just turned 4 years old a few weeks ago.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

You have recently gained great interest in watching Power Rangers on Netflix. It was that same type of thrilling, over-the-top action in the Marvel Universe Live show that you were exposed to, only instead of on a laptop screen, you got to see it live in person, while sitting in between Mommy and Daddy.

I paid attention to all the families around us and they seemed to be as excited as we were to be there.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

One of my favorite parts was the getting to see the nonstop motorcycle tricks. Conveniently, most of the Avengers (Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner before he becomes the Hulk, Wolverine, Spiderman. etc.) all drive motorcycles while constantly “popping wheelies.”

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

I was so impressed when Captain America jumped up a ramp unto a ledge; it had to be at least 15 feet high!

And of course there were constantly explosions going on; one of the bad buys even “caught on fire” and ran around on flames.

Mommy’s favorite part was when Spiderman “stood upside-down” on the Green Goblin’s glider.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

Speaking of flying, there was a lot of that going on the entire show!

I’m pretty sure your favorite part was when Bruce Banner turned into the Hulk.

How awesome!

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

The crowd went wild when that happened. It was awesome to see. Our seats happened to be right where that was taken place.

However, my warmest memory of Mommy and I taking you to see Marvel Universe Live was during intermission. Our friends the Van Dykes ended up winning the giveaway I did on the Facebook page for Family Friendly Daddy Blog.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

So as we were speaking to them, I happened to look down at you, as you were sitting on Mommy’s lap, looking to the aisle with your hand raised up in the air.

I then saw that a vendor was selling illuminating toy swords and you wanted one. It didn’t help that Jackson, the Van Dykes’ 3 year-old son, had gotten one at the beginning of the show.

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

I offered to buy you any $15 Transformer you wanted instead, knowing we were going to Target the next morning…

All I can say is you’re one lucky kid. It didn’t take much more than a frantic look from you, knowing that was your only chance to get one of those swords, and you had convinced Mommy and me to bascially beg the vendor to take our $25 so we could get you that sword.

And boy you were proud. Just as I expected, this sword was not simply an impulse buy.

The next morning, Mommy and I found you in bed, clutching the sword. From there, we went to go see Santa at Bass Pro Shop; and you guessed it, you took the sword!

Dear Jack: Marvel Universe Live- Family Friendly Review (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

We had a wonderful time as a family and I would recommend Marvel Universe Live to any families who would like to see non-stop action, explosions, fires, motorcycle stunts, martial arts, and “flying” Marvel characters.

I hope Marvel Universe Live returns to Nashville next year!

Love,

Daddy

2014 Scion FR-S (Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ) Review: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

A few weeks ago in preparation for my son’s upcoming 4th birthday, I requested to review “something special” for him. Therefore, a 2014 Scion FR-S was delivered to my home for me to review the week of his birthday.

I explained to my son, “This is Lightning McQueen.”

It really does look like the character from Disney’s Cars, doesn’t it?

Obviously, this is a very sporty, sharp looking car. There is no denying that.

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

And to make sure I got the full experience on this sports car, I asked for the manual transmission.

Let’s talk about that…

I’ve driven a stick shift since I was 15 and the Reverse gear has always been the bottom right section.

Not with the Scion FR-S, which is also known as the Subaru BRZ and/or the Toyota 86, depending on which part of the world you are in; more on that in a minute…

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

It actually required some research to figure out how to use this apparently European style of a gear shifter. I noticed there was a lack of information on the Internet and even YouTube on how to shift the gears.

The main problem I was having was simply getting the car into Reverse.

Here’s the trick, as demonstrated in the video I made for you:

You have to pull up on the “ring” of the shifter before it will allow you to move the shifter left into the Reverse gear.

Once you move the shifter into 1st Gear from there, you will probably feel a slight vibration, sort of like a “triple click” so that you know you’re in 1st gear, not 3rd.

That’s something else that may take some getting used to: the gears are not so much in the tradition squared “U” formation. They are more of a “V”; very tight.

Again, this all takes some getting used to. It might literally require driving around the block a time or two, literally.

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

I suppose that’s sort of the qualifier for the manual transmission version of the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86:

You have to be pretty confident in your abilities to drive a stick shift to enjoy it. I feel this car is designed for that corner of the market that is still passionate about driving a stick. After all, if you’re like me, you probably see the ability of driving a stick shift as a lost art.

This car is not for most people, which is probably why you don’t see an abundance of them at Toyota/Scion dealerships. Chances are, if you’ve made it this far in to my review, you’re part of that demographic that the Scion FR-S is intended for.

If you’re curious about the size of the back seat, you came to the right place. I rode in it for about 4 miles round trip to and from the storage facility (we’re moving across town); with my dad driving and my wife up front.

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

I am 5’9” and 143 pounds. Sitting back in the seat, the top of my head was against the back windshield. Sitting straight up, my head cleared the ceiling by a half an inch.

As long as my knees weren’t together, leg room wasn’t an issue. I sort of have to straddle the front passenger seat; which was not pushed fully back; only about half the way.

And here’s a video I made on on that too:

A child will easily fit back there, given that your wife is okay with it…

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

Adults my size or smaller shouldn’t have too much of an issue for shorter trips. Granted, I don’t think anyone is expecting a “road trip worthy” back seat from the Scion FR-S.

After all, it’s a 2 door sports car. However, it does indeed have 4 seats and 4 seatbelts should the occasion arise.

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

Lastly, I want to point out the obscure fact that the motor for the Scion FR-S is made by both Toyota and Subaru!

If you’re familiar at all with Scion, you know they are the sportier, younger sister of Toyota.

So I wasn’t surprised to see a Toyota engine in it, but I definitely was surprised to see the Subaru name. Check out my video on that now:

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

Apparently, overseas, Toyota and Subaru team up for special projects; unlike here in America, where it appears those two companies are competitors.

Notice the “86” emblem on the sides of the car. I suppose that’s a sort of “Easter Egg” that points to the fact that outside of America, this vehicle would be a Toyota 86, or a Subaru BRZ.

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

As you can see from the dashboard display, I was averaging over 28 miles a gallon in this $25,000 sports car.

I get a free tank of gas with each car I review, and sadly, I didn’t even get through the first quarter tank. I could have easily spent another week driving this one!

2014 Scion FR-S: How To Shift In Reverse/Size Of Back Seat/Toyota Subaru Engine

At least my brother-in-law and I got a chance to take it out for a spin down Broadway in Nashville late Saturday night.

I’m all for answering any questions you have about the Scion FR-S. I really do feel there’s a lack of information on the Internet about this car, so I’m hoping to change that.
