Dear Holly: A Little Girl’s Bedroom Inside of a Little Girl’s Bedroom

8 years.

Dear Holly,

Your big birthday gift from Mommy and me was an Our Generation bedroom for your dolls; which you specifically asked for.

I laughed out loud the first morning I walked into your bedroom after you set it up and broke it in, by having your dolls arrange some of their accessories in it.

The thought is hilarious, absurd, and yet completely logical for an 8 year-old girl:

That a little girl’s bedroom is now inside of a little girl’s bedroom.

When I asked you how old your newest Our Generation doll Jenny is, you responded, “She’s 8, like me.”

So it is confirmed: In my house, I have an 8 year-old girl with a bedroom that hosts its own bedroom for another 8 year-old girl.

It is quite the frame-in-frame situation.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: I Let You Get a New Barbie Doll… Because?

6 years, 5 months.

Dear Holly,

This past Saturday while Mommy and your brother were out at a boat race in Nashville, you and I got to spend the day together.

I took you to the farmers’ market, to the mall, and out for coffee; where you got pumpkin spice cake.

Apparently, you and Mommy had worked out some kind of agreement and understanding that you could buy a toy, with a budget of $15, simply because it’s been so long since your birthday, and it’s still a couple months away until Christmas.

When it was all said and done, I let you get a $20 Barbie.

Not sure how that all works out…

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You and Isabella Have Matching Dolls of Yourselves

4 years, 9 months.

Dear Holly,

Recently, your friend Isabella came over to our house to visit. She brought you a fun Christmas gift, that happened to match one of her own:

It is a miniature American Girl doll that looks like you, to compliment the doll that Isabella got that looks like her.

You have been carrying around your “Little Holly” with you everywhere we go- in the car, to school, and to bed.

It’s always a nice surprise to get a Christmas present, after Christmas.

And this one was especially thoughtful- as you and Isabella both now have one!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: The Baby Doll Saga Continues

5 years, 3 months.

Dear Jack: The Baby Doll Saga Continues

Dear Jack,

Last week I wrote to Holly about how you are taking care of one of Holly’s baby dolls until she gets here next month around April 21st.

Well, since then, you have only further perpetuated the idea that you are, in some ways, “practicing for your sister” with the doll.

Last Saturday night at 11:30 as I was heading to bed, I walked into your room to check on you, as is the tradition every night.

I immediately realized I needed to go get my phone and take a picture. You had fallen asleep while tightly holding on to “Dollee”.

Now, in the event anyone might think for a moment that you are “playing with dolls” like a girl would, you easily disprove that theory.

The next morning, you took a Lego chain and fastened it around Dollee’s neck. You followed Mommy and me around all morning, as we prepared for Grandma’s arrival for California.

As you did, you announced at one point: “She has the chain so she can fly… and so she can’t run away.”

Dear Jack: The Baby Doll Saga Continues

There’s nearly something poetic in there about the concept of freedom; how it can actually imprison as if we abuse our freedom or simply make poor decisions along the way that entrap us.

But as a 5 year-old boy, I’m pretty sure that’s not what you were implying.

If I were to translate, I would say you that recognize, as a big brother A) the importance of entertaining and playing with the baby [hence, the “flying”] and B) the fact that the baby must be under constant supervision to keep them from wandering into a dangerous situation [hence, the “chain”].

By the time Holly finally gets here, we may have to clean Dollee up for her. Good thing Holly already has a few other brand new dolls waiting for her in the crib.

Love,

Daddy
