Dear Jack: Spending a Saturday Morning at a Car Show

12 years, 7 months.

Dear Jack,

It just so happens that an assisted living facility near us hosts a monthly car show in their parking lot.

So this past Saturday, for the first time together as a family, we attended a car show.

You have always been into cars. I remember back when you were 17 months old, I documentated when we bought you your first Hot Wheels car:

“You want that car, Jack? That’s a cool-looking one.” I looked at the “roll back” price of 88 cents. “Yeah son, we’ll get you that car.”

Now, eleven years later, you are spending your hard-earned dog-watching money on model cars, remote control cars, and still… Hot Wheels.

Something tells me you are never going to outgrow your love of cars!

Daddy

Dear Jack: The Father’s Day Where Papa Saved the Day!

12 years, 7 months.

Dear Jack,

Last week was not only Father’s Day Weekend, but it was also Nonna and Papa’s 46th wedding anniversary, as well as when Mommy and I had bought tickets to see Bryan Adams in concert in downtown Nashville.

So they chose to spend Father’s Day and their wedding anniversary at our house, three hours away.

Because Papa can fix anything, which just happened to be what the t-shirt said that we gave him as part of his Father’s Day gifts, we had some projects for him to tackle while he was in town.

Not only did he save the day by replacing the leaking pipe leading to our water heater in the garage, but another miracle he was able to perform was to fix the tire on your model truck that you had accidentally glued on the wrong way.

Maybe at some point, Papa can visit us without us giving him a task list?

Probably not. He’s too good at fixing everything!

Daddy

Dear Holly: Your Father’s Day Card You Made For Me

7 years, 2 months.

Dear Holly,

Leading up to Father’s Day last week, I found a little surprise in my notebook for work: “I love you, Daddy.”

So it was no surprise to when it actually was Father’s Day, you gave me a special homemade card that you had worked on all week.

You are wired like I am:

When it comes to the 5 Love Languages, Words of Affirmation is at the top!

Something that makes it so easy to appreciate you and relate to is that you make a point to tell your family how much they mean to you!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You Helped Mommy Repaint Our Backyard Sign

7 years, 2 months.

Dear Holly,

We have always talked as a family about the idea of buying one of those giant metal chickens for our backyard. This past weekend, we settled for two lifesize metal chickens instead.

After we set them up in the backyard, Mommy decided our sign that hanging up on the fence needed to be repainted, since the words had completed faded. They originally read, “This is My Happy Place.”

Our backyard has now had a little makeover. We can enjoy it for about another week… until the mosquitoes and humidity make it too miserable to be outside in Tennessee for the rest of the summer.

Daddy

Dear Jack: What “Homeschool Summer School” Looks Like

12 and a half years.

Dear Jack,

Mommy joked with you this week, “What if we started homeschooling you?”

You immediately replied, “No! Then I couldn’t be around any people.”

However, during the summer, I suppose things do resemble the concept of homeschool a little bit.

We are paying you and your sister a “reading allowance” this summer, to help encourage you both to use your brains on books… and it’s totally working.

You always self-elect some “P.E.” time right before lunch, as you go on a bike ride through surrounding neighborhoods.

And then usually after lunch, you join me at the kitchen table; which also serves as my “office” and your “shop” for rebuilding cars.

That’s pretty much what the next two months are going to look like.

Love,

Daddy
