Dear Jack: Your 1st Week as a 5th Grader

10 years, 8 months.

Dear Jack,

Even though it was exactly 30 years ago that I started 5th grade, it still feels like you are catching up to me somehow. I suppose it’s because I’ve retained more of my life’s memories since I was in 5th grade; as opposed to previous school grades you have passed through.

This week you tried out a free class of martial arts- and you completely loved it!

I am glad you did, because I recognize you need a place to channel your energy, and you definitely are craving structure from an outside institution beyond our home, our church, and your school.

For the first time in your school career, you are the oldest grade of the whole place; as your sister is beginning Kindergarten today.

This is a big year for you both!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Saying Goodbye to Our 1st Family Pet, Alpha the Syrian Hamster

10 years, 8 months.

Dear Jack,

For your 9th birthday nearly 2 years ago, your main gift from Mommy and me was a Syrian hamster; who became our first ever family pet so far.

Every night since then, it has been part of our family routine and ritual, for me to get the hamster out of his aquarium and let you and your sister hold him and play with him, leading up to bedtime.

He even travelled multiple times with us to Alabama during the holidays.

Choosing a Syrian hamster was definitely the right decision for our family.

But as we knew from the beginning, a Syrian hamster has an average lifespan of only 2 to 3 years.

I hadn’t factored in the fact that they are typically 3 months old when they are sold at pet stores.

So it does make sense that as of this very month, our pet hamster Alpha turned 2 years old, which in hamster years, was more like 80 years old.

We spent of the 2nd half of last week sensing it coming, based on his weakened behavior. I appreciate that, though, because it gave us all time to say goodbye in his last final days.

During his final night, we helped him while he passed on, by all of our family petting him as he faded away.

We held a special funeral for him outside, as you took it upon yourself to play the theme song to “Mork and Mindy” (Alpha’s favorite song) and insisted that each member of our family toss a pistachio nut (Alpha’s favorite snack) into has grave, right before I placed the dirt on top of his body to bury him.

Sometimes, we have to collectively experience sadness to experience life.

Alpha allowed us to do that this past week- and for the past nearly 2 years, he taught us to care for and to love… a rodent.

A special rodent, who brought us all happiness as a family.

Dear Holly: You are the Brightest One and Nonna is the Darkest One

5 years, 3 months.

Dear Holly,

Sometimes while I am giving you a bath, you randomly tell me some of the most insightful discoveries going on in your head, as a 5 year-old girl; like recently:

“Daddy, am I the brightest one?… And Nonna is the darkest?”

You are self-aware of the fact that you are curiously the fairest complected member of our entire living family tree; as it is simply a natural response when people see you with any family members; to point it out.

And true, it’s most obvious when you are next to Nonna.

You managed to get all the German and Norwegian genes, and apparently none of the Mexican or Mediterranean.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Summer Camp, Sister Edition

10 years, 8 months.

Dear Jack,

I would say the theme of your summer this year has been “Different Summer Camp Every Week.” Between your week at Coding Camp, your week at Space Camp, our family trip to Georgia, our family trip to North Carolina, our family trip to California, your week of church summer camp in Alabama, in addition to another week in Alabama at Nonna and Papa’s house, you’ve hardly had much time to be bored at our house!

But for the nights you have slept in your own bed, you have insisted that your sister join you for what I call “Sister Summer Camp”, where Mommy and I let the two of you stay up later than normal.

I can tell it helps the two of you have good quality time together. And it’s your choice to have her there with you in your bedroom, as she sleeps on her sleeping bag on the floor next to you, or the bunk bed above you.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: I Took You to Preschool for the Final Time This Week

5 years, 3 months.

Dear Holly,

You start Kindergarten next Friday. And with us leaving today to go on one last little summer vacation, that means these past few days were the final times I would take you to preschool or pick you up.

More specifically, this makes the last time that I as a parent will walk into a preschool for one of my children.

Your brother was finishing up preschool when you were born.

So this makes the first time in over a decade that we as a family are truly graduating from preschool.

I’m taking it all in. A chapter in our lives is closing- and another is beginning.

Love,

Daddy
