Dear Jack: One More Month to Spend Time with Your Current Friends

13 years, 5 months.

Dear Jack,

Our house here in Tennessee officially goes on the market this coming Monday.

With your 7th grade school year coming to a close in about a month, these are the final weeks of you seeing and hanging out with your current group of friends everyday.

Often after school, you go to hang out with them; playing basketball or football in our neighborhood or one of the surrounding ones.

I’m not sure that you’ve really processed this yet, but even though you’ll still have their cell phone numbers and will be able to keep in touch with them after we move, you are facing a turning point in your life where you will be leaving them behind and making new friends.

So when I see this picture of you and your friends right now, this is what I think about.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: New Friends Await

7 years, 11 months.

Dear Holly,

Last weekend, Nonna and Papa once again hosted the official Easter Egg Hunt at their house in Alabama.

Pretty much immediately, you got to meet a friend of your cousin Darla’s. The three of you hung out together the entire time.

As we finish out your current 2nd school year here in Tennessee, you continue to stand by your statement, “I’m pretty good at making new friends.”

You’re right. That’s actually one of the things you do best… and with little effort!

I am excited for the new friends you will make in Alabama.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: Treasuring Your Brothers Hand-Me-Downs

7 years, 10 months.

Dear Holly,

With our family’s upcoming move in a couple of months, the living room has become the official holding space for boxes needing to be hauled for each next trip to Alabama. This strategy has at this point already prevented us from eventually having to rent the largest U-Haul truck for our final moving trip.

As we are constantly in the process of packing up for the move, we are also determining which of our belongings won’t be making the move with us.

Last week I was on my way out the door for the gym one morning and I saw you hugging a stuffed animal I had never seen you with before.

“Holly, is that a new stuffed animal? Where did you get that?”

You were so proud to tell me, “Jack gave it to me!”

Your brother’s hand-me-downs are your treasures.

Love,

Daddy

A Step-By-Step Guide To Moving With Kids And Pets (By Guest Blogger, University Moving and Storage)

No matter how you look at it, moving can be stressful — especially when you add kids and pets into the equation. Changing routines, packing everything you own and uprooting your household is a surefire recipe for stress regardless of who you are.

When you can’t understand why everything is in disorder, it’s even more difficult to cope. So when you’re moving with pets and kids, what can you do to ease the tension for the ones you love? To help answer that question, see the following tips and accompanying step-by-step guide to improving the way you move with children and pets.

Preparation

The more you can prepare your household for a move, the better they’ll be able to handle it. Take advantage of the time you have prior to your move to help everyone efficiently cope. Two key ways to prepare:

· Practice traveling

· Talk about the move

With your kids especially, have conversations about what’s coming for the family. Make the idea of moving a journey, and get them involved in the prep work. Maybe you let them choose decorations for their new rooms, or drive them around the new neighborhood. Help them visualize what’s coming, as much as possible. Equally, if you know you’ll be spending a lot of time in the car during a long-distance move, get your family used to the idea. Practice with a few shorter trips to adapt everyone to what moving will involve.

Make Plans for Moving Day

Expect moving day to be frenzied, and do everything you can to ease that stress. Can you have friends watch your pets? Can you hire a sitter for the kids? Maybe you can keep your pet in an extra room or the backyard of your new home? If someone is keeping is your children and/or pets entertained while you’re unpacking, it’s possible to relieve a lot of stress associated with the move.

Post-Move Tips

Returning your pets and kids to their routines as soon as possible is a good way to help in the first days after a move. Set up food dishes and get your pet on a regular eating schedule. Give your kids their preferred toys as soon as you unpack. If there are certain things you regularly do as a family — such as taco Tuesdays or weekend movies — try to apply them when you’re transitioning. Getting back to routine provides comfort and security to little ones in the midst of change.
