Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

4 years, 1 month.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Dear Jack,

With Mommy and I both being able to take the day after Christmas off (Friday, December 26th), we were able to extend our official Christmas break to basically a 5 day holiday.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

That meant that the fun wasn’t over just because Christmas day had passed. The morning started off with you trying on some on gag glasses that happened to stashed with some of my old toys there at Nonna and Papa’s house.

You then put them on Pandy and made him the teacher of the class…

Mommy and I decided to take you and Nana in the Lexus LX on a one hour drive through the mountains to a place called Flintstone, Georgia; where my own grandparents live, just a few miles from the Chattanooga, Tennessee city limit.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

We filled up the built-in cooler with Larabars and water for snacks; and I made sure we had some DVDs for you to watch on the way there.

Of course we adults had plenty of beautiful mountain scenery to enjoy, as you sang to us…

We rarely end up visiting that side of the family during the holidays, so once we got there, I saw cousins I haven’t seen since before you were born.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

To break the ice with them, and to help make you feel more relaxed, I took turns sneaking up to each one of my male cousins and pretending to punch them in the stomach; in the over-the-top style of the Power Rangers, or Marvel Universe Live that we recently saw.

“Punch the one with the white beard, Daddy!” you instructed me after you saw one of my uncles sitting on the couch.

Realizing that we had moved on from pretending to punch my male cousins to now my uncles, I “started a fight” with my Uncle Johnny (Papa’s older brother); who I would probably have to say other than your Papa, is most responsible for essentially teaching me to roughhouse at family get-togethers.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Once I “punched him” and told him that you told me to do it, he started motioning to you from across the room to “come here.”

He grabbed you by the foot and pulled you across the rug as you laughed hysterically.

Shortly after, my aunt Rosa (Papa’s youngest sister) asked you to let her take Pandy home and once you refused, she started swatting you with a roll of wrapping paper; like the way you and I played just the day before.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Horseplay really is the best way for a little boy to get to know his extended family, if you ask me.

Afterwards, I took you outside on the deck for some fresh air.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Then it was time was receive your gift from my grandmother, which couldn’t been any more appropriate for you:

A Captain America racecar and his nemesis Red Skull’s vehicle as well. You were so proud!

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Before we left for a late lunch at Whole Foods, just 8 miles away, one of my cousins helped me load up Papa’s gift, a 3 ton jack, into the Lexus LX.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Once we got home, Papa showed you how the jack worked, in his shop.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

And Mommy and I even ventured out and bought our new house’s washer and dryer at Gary’s in my hometown of Fort Payne, AL.

Dear Jack: The Day After Christmas Was Still Fun Too!

So yeah, the fun didn’t end just because Christmas day was over!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

4 years, 1 month.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

Dear Jack,

The way I’m wired, I just can’t stay indoors all day relaxing. I have to get out and feel the sun on my skin and breathe in the fresh, brisk air.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

So while I definitely appreciated all the fun we had Christmas morning, I headed up a trip to Little River Falls, which is just about 5 miles from Nonna and Papa’s house, in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Papa had a sinus infection, so he had to stay at home. However, had he went, all 8 of us could have fit in the 2014 Lexus LX we were driving that week.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

As we made our way down the walkway bridge to the waterfall, I realized something:

Your Uncle Andrew was the one taking care of you, while Mommy was taking care of your cousin Calla.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

In essence, it was like Mommy and Uncle Andrew swapped kids for a little while. Like most little boys, you idolize the men in your life.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

So while you and I do have a close relationship, I appreciate how much you look up to your Uncle Andrew, who has the mechanical skills I don’t.

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

We had a fun race back to the car. Of course, Uncle Andrew had a slight disadvantage since he was carrying you!

Dear Jack: Little River Falls/Abandoned Church Christmas Trip

From there, we visited the old abandoned church we discovered last year while I was reviewing the Lexus LS. Last year, you and Calla were asleep so you didn’t get to check it out.

As we unloaded from the Lexus LX, Nana was concerned you’d fall out on the ground once I opened the door.

http://www.parents.com/blogs/dadabase/2014/01/01/the-dadabase/what-parents-do-when-the-kids-are-asleep-with-the-grandparents/

However, she saw that because there is an extra step before the running board, so combined with your climbing skills, you managed just fine.

http://www.parents.com/blogs/dadabase/2014/01/01/the-dadabase/what-parents-do-when-the-kids-are-asleep-with-the-grandparents/

So we did indeed attend church on Christmas day; we were just the only ones there.

Dear Jack: Our New House’s Shutters, Mailbox, & Interior Paint (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

Dear Jack: Our New House’s Shutters, Mailbox, & Interior Paint (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

Dear Jack,

This past weekend, in between going to Marvel Universe Live, seeing Santa with Sophie, and going to Jacob’s birthday party, we also penciled in some to visit our new house that we are building.

Is Spanking Actually More Effective Than The Alternative?

We started off with lunch at Whole Foods, of course.

You and Mommy had some good times playing around in the back as I enjoyed driving what I have referred to as the “Super Mario cloud,” the Lexus RX 450h, around Nashville.

fun in car

We arrived to see some subtle changes that helped make our new home seem even more like a real house and not simply a construction project.

Is Spanking Actually More Effective Than The Alternative?

There is now a mailbox in front of our house! As long as we’ve lived in our townhouse, nearly 7 years, we’ve never had an actual mailbox.

Dear Jack: Our New House’s Shutters, Mailbox, & Interior Paint (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

But now we will. You can help Mommy and me check the mail. That’ll be fun!

I also noticed that they were actually finishing up the curb there as well. It wasn’t until we pulled away in the Lexus RX 450h that I realized the workers were actually waiting on us to leave so we’d be out of the way to finish the job.

As we stepped into the driveway, we were able to see our new wooden shutters, which I assume may be stained darker by the time the house is finished. I love them!

We saw in the garage that our ceiling fans have arrived and will likely be installed in the next couple of weeks.

Inside our house, we noticed the interior doors are now all installed.

And… the walls are now painted! They are the shade of crème that we chose, contrasted against the white base boards. Eventually, we will probably paint some of the downstairs that willow green color that we used in our townhome.

We drove back over to the model home and checked in with the in-house agent. You insisted on showing her your new sword from Marvel Universe Live. She was very impressed.

Then you had to check in on the snowman doll, as well as your “pizza parlor” that you hid under the Christmas tree last time we were there.

Linda, the agent, told us that she’s had many visitors curiously ask about that piece of foam under the tree so she has explained that you were behind it being there.

Dear Jack: Our New House’s Shutters, Mailbox, & Interior Paint (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

She also told us that one of the next major changes on our house will be that the hardwood floors and carpet will be put in.

Our closing date is January 29, just about a month and a half from now. It won’t be long until we’re in our new house… as long as everything goes according to schedule.

Dear Jack: Our New House’s Shutters, Mailbox, & Interior Paint (Lexus RX 450h Weekend)

We finished off our visit by driving by preschools in the area. I wonder where you’ll go…

Love,

Daddy

2014 Lexus RX 450h 5-DR SUV (DVD Player Equipped): Family Friendly Review

For the rest of this week, go ahead and expect to see several upcoming exciting stories about events that took place last week, while our family was fortunate to review the 2014 Lexus RX 450h from a family friendly perspective…

But first, I would like to highlight the features of this vehicle that stood out the most to our family of three.

In my “2 Minute Walk Around” video above, I mentioned that driving the Lexus RX 450 is like when Super Mario hops in the cloud and drives it. With this vehicle being hybrid, you can’t really hear the engine, providing for an extremely quiet ride and idle.

As you can expect from a Lexus luxury vehicle, the cabin itself is like a really classy lounge. My wife always loves it when we review a vehicle with heated and cooled seats.

This was the first time I actually used them myself. Obviously, as you can see from these photos, things got a bit frosty; so I definitely took advantage of the “bun warmers” feature.

I know this may sound like a peculiar feature to highlight, but I really loved the gear shifter. Granted, this was an automatic transmission. But ergonomically, the shifter handle is in the perfect place and I really liked how the handle was a bit longer than most; it somehow made it glide more naturally than most vehicles I have driven.

2014 Lexus RX 450h 5-DR SUV (DVD Player Equipped): Family Friendly Review

Like every Lexus SUV I have ever reviewed, all I have to do is just press the button on the “fifth door” and it closes by itself. That’s always fun.

As for my 4 year-old son Jack, it was very obvious what he liked most about the Lexus RX 450h; the DVD screens on the back of the front screens, with Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound (15 speakers.)

2014 Lexus RX 450h 5-DR SUV (DVD Player Equipped): Family Friendly Review

It was like Jack’s own private theatre in the back seat.

One of his aunts just happened to send him a Christmas present which included a Berenstain Bears DVD.

After I saw how special he felt back there, I decided to cash in some points at Best Buy and let him pick out another DVD.

He chose Disney’s Dinosaur, which is perfectly appropriate and relevant for him at this age.

2014 Lexus RX 450h 5-DR SUV (DVD Player Equipped): Family Friendly Review

There’s my quick overview. If you have $60,190 to spend on a new luxury SUV, I can’t imagine how the 2014 Lexus RX 450h would be a wrong choice for your family. I didn’t even mention that fact it averages 29 miles per gallon!

So stay tuned for upcoming posts this week involving the 2014 Lexus RX 450h; including going to see Marvel Universe Live, Santa Claus at Bass Pro Shop, and a Nerf birthday party where they shipped in snow for the kids to play in!

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

I’m assuming you just finished reading 2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Grandma’s Great Escape!

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

So after having a very fun/random/original weekend helping my Grandma “escape” from the nursing home, we hit the road back to Nashville where we live.

On top of an already busy weekend, my wife Jill just happened to win 2 free tickets for Dierks Bentley’s Miles & Music for Kids concert.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

We dropped off our son Jack at our friends’ house, where we had a lot of fun playing with their toys, then we drove to Riverfront Park in downtown Nashville.

Sure enough, this made only the 2nd time Jill and I had actually been to downtown Nashville this year; despite the fact we actually live in the Nashville city limits.

If you haven’t driven down Broadway in Nashville, or more importantly, walked down it, I took a few shots of it with my camera to share its timeless glory.

Granted, be prepared to pay around 10 bucks to park. But visiting downtown Nashville is an event of its own, so that’s how I look at it.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

I hinted at it already in 2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Grandma’s Great Escape! but the Lexus GX 460 was my favorite Lexus vehicle so far.

At the risk of sounding borderline bravado, the Lexus GX 460 is just such a masculine ride. (Though my wife and my mom seemed to like the vehicle as much as I did!) Like I said before, driving it reminded me a lot of the Toyota Tacoma, which is my favorite Toyota vehicle.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

It felt like the appropriate vehicle to be driving while in downtown Nashville; which back in 2009 was voted “America’s #1 Manliest City”.

My wife and I got to see Jon Pardi and Randy Houser play right there in front of the Cumberland River, which runs right through the middle of downtown Nashville.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

Had we waited around a few more hours, we would have eventually seen Dierks Bentley perform, but we wanted to make sure we got our son Jack to bed at a decent hour.

As we made our way back to the car, we strolled past dozens of “honky-tonks,” all of which have a no-name, trying-it-to-make-it, paying-my-dues singers performing in the window.

I like living in Nashville, even if I’m barely exposed to the true stereotypes the city is known for.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Family Friendly Review/Downtown Nashville

Even though we didn’t actually get to see Dierks Bentley with those free tickets, the important thing is that my wife and I got to hang out “alone together” on a date, which is something we don’t get to do often; not that that makes us unique by any means.

Life is busy and our schedules are overwhelming. It’s nice to take a break and enjoy the back drop.
