Review Of Sunburst Adventures Whitewater Rafting, Ocoee River

These days, each year for your wedding anniversary, you’re evidently supposed to post a picture on Facebook of yourself with your spouse on your wedding today, with a caption reading something like this:

“Happy Anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been (insert number here) wonderful years of wedded bliss…”.

Meanwhile, my wife and I were too busy on the morning of our 6th year anniversary (July 5th) to update our Facebook statuses…

We left at 6:23 AM in the Toyota Highlander to go to Benton, Tennessee for our 9:30 departure from Sunburst Adventures for whitewater rafting! I had been rafting several times thoughout my high school years, but mainly on the tamer Nantahala River near North Carolina.

But on the Ocoee, the ride is wild enough to require a guide. My wife had never been at all. It had been 9 years for me.

Simply put, going whitewater rafting was the perfect way to celebrate our 6th year wedding anniversary. I was particularly pleased with the set-up of Sunburst Adventures, as compared to other companies I have gone with in the past.

The guides were fun, free-spirited, and great at communicating the directions. (We loved our guide, Abby.) I was also impressed with the facilities as well; not run down at all.

The family of four that my wife and I were placed with in the raft were a great fit for us. Turns out, randomly, that the dad of the family and I graduated from the same small high school, 12 years apart; in Fort Payne, Alabama. We had never met until this weekend and only learned what we had in common halfway through the trip!

Going whitewater rafting brings people together. It’s not scary, but it is thrilling. So it only makes sense that my wife and I chose whitewater rafting as a way to celebrate our anniversary.

Basically, it’s impossible to not talk about how fun the trip was afterwards. You just can’t be bored doing something like that.

Plus, you get to be outside enjoying God’s green Earth, breathing fresh air, and feeling the sunshine.

Our son is only 3 and a half, so he’s not quite old enough for an adventure this thrilling. Until then, my wife and I have sort of decided to make it a new tradition to go whitewater rafting each summer.

2014 Toyota Highlander: Platinum Package Including Pre-Collision System With Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Let me clear up any confusion… Yes, I did indeed review a 2014 Toyota Highlander while on vacation in Lake Tahoe two weeks ago.

But that was a different one. It was was black. This one today is silver…

Plus, reviewing a Highlander while back at home in Nashville gave me the opportunity to appreciate some features I didn’t notice the first time around.

For example, the air was low one day in the front passenger tire, but I didn’t realize that on my own. However, I was alerted on the dashboard what was wrong.

So using the built-in GPS, I was able to find the closest gas station where I could fill up the tire. Had I not been alerted by the vehicle itself, I could have ended up driving too far on that tire; it could have went flat on me.

Another interesting feature I want to point out is the “pre-collision system with dynamic radar cruise control.”

Say you’ve got the cruise control set on 70 mph and everything is going fine… until you get behind a slower vehicle going 68 mph.

The Highlander (Limited PLT V6 FWD with Platinum Package) automatically slows down to match the vehicle in front of you. Pretty clever, actually.

There’s also a setting called “lane departure alert” that lets you know anytime you veer over into another lane by accident.

I’m not a high-tech kind of guy, but I have to point out that for anyone is who is, this is a smart SUV.

My brother-in-law, who is the epitome of high tech, set it up to where I could use my “dumb phone” (which has no Internet) over the speakers of the car.

That was the first time I’ve ever got to sync my phone up to a car. I felt special.

I will close on this note. I want to remind you that just because a car company is “foreign owned,” it doesn’t mean the cars it makes aren’t made in America.

Take a look at these pictures in which I circled in blue the phrase “Made in U.S.A.”

Meanwhile, there are “American car companies” that have the majority of their parts made and assembled overseas. I quickly recognize the double standard.

I am now inspired to start promoting where the cars are actually made. As you can see, this 2014 Toyota Highlander was made here in America. In Princeton, Indiana, to be exact.

Review Of Toddler Mum-Mums: Apple, Banana, And Strawberry Rice Biscuits

I love reviewing food products! Today I am featuring Toddler Mum-Mum rice biscuits, by a brand called Hot Kid.

For the review, I was sent 2 boxes of the banana, 2 boxes of the apple, and 2 boxes of the organic strawberry.

Toddler Mum-Mum review

To meet the criteria for my review, the food could not contain artifical food dyes or flavors, or high fructose corn syrup; which in my opinion, is the easiest ways to identify junk food.

With that being said, Toddler Mum-Mum rice biscuits do not contain artifical food dyes or flavors, or high fructose corn syrup; nor do they contain preservatives, gluten, egg, or peanuts.

If you are a strict vegan or vegetarian, please note they contain gelatin, which is an animal by-product also found in pudding and marshmallows.

My niece Calla really loved Mum-Mums… all July 4th weekend. My sister, her mom, said she wouldn’t stop eating them!

Toddler Mum-Mum review

As the name implies, Toddler Mum-Mums are especially intended for toddlers and older. (My niece just turned 3, though.)

While at the grocery store yesterday, I looked at the competition. Turns out, unless you’re at Whole Foods, most grocery stores contain mystery ingredient filled versions of Mum-Mums as the competition.

Toddler Mum-Mum review

In other words, Mum-Mums stand out in the crowd in that their brand cares enough about its consumers to not include a long paragraph of ingredients you have to Google to even find out what they are; only to find out those ingredients shouldn’t even be considered as food to begin with. Mum-Mums only contain about 6 different ingredients.

Dear Jack: The Transition From The Dadabase To Family Friendly Daddy Blog

3 years, 7 months.

Family Friendly Daddy Blog

Dear Jack,

Well, it’s been a week since I finally revealed to you that for the past 3 years, I had been the officially daddy blogger of Parents.com.

I wanted to make sure that in the midst of enlarging my blogging territory by sharing new parenting infographics, reviewing cars, and writing about life as a plant-based family here on Family Friendly Daddy Blog, that I don’t neglect continuing my letters to you.

(To differentiate my letters to you from my other posts, I will be including “Dear Jack” in the title of them.)

Because to me, that’s the heart of what I do as a daddy blogger. In other words, you personally are the heart of what I do as a writer.

Right now I’m halfway through transferring my thousand Dadabase posts over to Family Friendly Daddy Blog.

Sure, I could Google some easy way to transfer it all over at once, but somehow that’s not tempting to me.

Evidently, it’s therapeutic for me to be forced to read through every single one of my thousand or so daddy blog posts for the past 3 years, remembering the stories our family has lived through; making us who we are today.

Seriously…

Go back to the year 2012 and see how horribly cheesy (!) I was back then. I really must have thought I was some cool 80s game show host or something.

The clothes, the hair, the corny catch-phrases.

But I understand, that’s how life is: I had to live through these experiences to become who I am today.

Looking back, it’s like I had to play this character I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable playing, but I only thought I felt comfortable at the time.

However, now, I truly am comfortable in my life’s roles.

It took 3 years of writing for Parents.com to graduate to this version of myself. I’m grateful Parents.com put up with a cornball like me for 3 years!

As for where we are now, I feel good.

I feel this change to Family Friendly Daddy Blog was important for us. The timing is right.

I’m just as curious as you are to see where this takes us, but I know this- wherever we go, we’re going to have a great time together.

Love,

Daddy

New Infographic: What’s Going On Inside Your Child’s Brain?

I’ve mentioned before that with a kid, there is no pause button. Especially with having a 3 and a half year-old son, his mind (and body) have to be constantly be moving.

Sure, that’s just how little boys are.

But I think it’s important to consider this from a scientific perspective. This new infographic, “What’s Going On Inside Your Child’s Brain?” does a great job of helping me understand.

The short version of it is that children are constantly learning and maturing…. at a faster rate than us adults. According to the infographic, we stop maturing by age 25, for the most part.

Contrast that with a child, who seems to need constant attention as compared to an adult, and it makes a lot of sense.

Check it out…

Your Child's Brain

What’s Going On Inside Your Child’s Brain?

Children vs Adult Brains:
A child’s brain has completely different priorities than an adults.
Children think, behave, and learn differently –
Meaning parenting and teaching can be a challenge

Below we see how different sections of the brain trigger behaviors in children and adults.

Most active areas in children:

1. Brain stem
The brain stem is the part of a child’s brain that controls heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.
2. Midbrain
The midbrain stimulates “arousal,” appetite/ satiety and sleep.

Most active areas in adults:

1. Limbic system
The limbic system controls sexual behavior, emotional reactivity and motor regulation.
2. Cortex
The cortex is responsible for concrete thought, affiliation and attachment.

The Brain Basics

1. Neurons:

    • Building blocks of the brain

    • Nerve cells that specialize to form brain sections

  • Communicate messages throughout the brain

2. Synapse:

    • A connection between 2 neurons

    • Each Neuron has thousands of synapses

  • Creates connections between thousands of neurons.

3. Myelin:

    • An insulating sheath that covers the length of mature neurons

    • Necessary for clear, efficient, electrical transmission

  • Increasing connection effectiveness by 3000x

Synapse Time Line

Brain development throughout stages of life:

[Newborns]

    • Developing automatic functions, the 5 senses, and motion

    • Brain is 25% of its future adult weight

  • Implicit (or unconscious) memory allows recognition of mother and family

[Toddlers]

    • Brain develops up to 2,000,000 synapses per second

  • Building the architecture for future functioning

[by Age 3]

    • Brain already weighs nearly 90% of it’s future adult weight

    • Explicit (conscious memory) develops

  • Future capacities for learning, social interaction, and emotional abilities are already largely established

[4 through 10 ]

    • Children’s brains are more than twice as active as adult’s brains.

  • Of the body’s total O2 intake, the adult brain consumes 20%A child’s brain consumes up to 50%

[by Age 8]

     “Logic” abilities start to form

[Age 11 into adulthood]

    • “Use it or Lose it”

  • Pruning: deleting lesser-used synapse connections making other pathways more efficient

[Age 14]

    • Myelination begins in the Frontal Lobe (higher learning)

  • Reasoning, planning, emotions, and problem-solving skills significantly develop

[Age 16] Drive a car

[Age 18] Vote

[Age 21] Drink Alcohol

[Age 23]

       Pruning completes

  • Nearly half of the child’s synapses have been deleted

[Age 25]

       Myelination completes

  • The brain is finally fully matured
Insurance rates drop – Not a coincidence

[Beyond:]

      Brain Composition

  • Continually changes as learning occurs throughout lifespan

No matter what your age, when it comes to brain functions, it’s literally “use ‘em or lose ‘em”
