Dear Holly: You Appreciate the Snow and the Beach in Moderation, Like Me

4 years, 10 months.

Dear Holly,

Just a few weeks ago, we were in the middle of what I would call a Tennessee Blizzard.

With your school closed, as well as your brother’s, Mommy and I were in a situation where we needed to not only keep working from home, but also keep your brother happy by letting him play in the snow; and to keep you happy by keeping you inside.

Whereas your brother was outside most of the day, each day that week playing in the snow (and never got sick!); you enjoyed the winter weather just long enough to go sledding and for a few photo ops.

It reminds me of what it is like when we go to the beach: All your brother wants to do is to stay outside, while you’re like me (and most people)… A couple of hours, and we’re ready to go back inside!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: You Dressed Up as a Character From the “I Survived” Books

10 years, 3 months.

Dear Jack,

Yesterday, your school had a fun theme where the students got to dress as a character from one of their favorite books.

You asked me, “Daddy, what can I dress up as?”

I looked in your closet, and found an old newsie hat that I gave to you a few years ago.

This week I’ve been reading an “I Survived” book to you, that your cousin gave you.

I said, “You know, most of these books take place during a time when boys wore hats like this one.”

Therefore, you got away with wearing a hat at school all day.

And funny enough, no one even asked you who you were dressed up as.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: No Adults Required When You’re With Your Cousin

4 years, 9 months.

Dear Holly,

Two things are certain when we visit Aunt Dana in Alabama: A) You’re going to have fun. B) I will hardly see you the whole time.

With your cousin Darla, the two of you easily keep yourselves entertained; especially with all the dolls and toys there.

Last weekend when we were visiting there, Mommy and I needed to sneak out to the store to pick up some dinner to cook, and you never even knew we left the house!

Really, it’s like no adults are required when you are with your cousin, who is the same age as you!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You Love Watching Peppa Pig While Eating Your Cereal in the Morning

4 years, 9 months.

Dear Holly,

Each morning as I am leaving for the gym before work, I kiss you goodbye as you are eating your peanut butter chocolate cereal at the kitchen table; while you watch Peppa Pig on Mommy’s old cell phone.

Last Sunday you ended up with about $17 to burn; after Mommy sold some of your old toys and clothes. What did you spend it on? A Peppa Pig playhouse that we found at Target for that exact amount.

Peppa Pig is a pretty big deal to you these days! And you start off the day with her every morning.

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: My Old GameCube is Your New Switch

10 years, 3 months.

Dear Jack,

Since your cousin got a new Nintendo Switch, and since some of your other friends in 4th grade got a Switch, you have been asking about the possibility of getting one too.

However, I was able to effectively get you to forget all about it…

I officially introduced you to my Nintendo GameCube from college; along with my decent sized library of games; most of which I never actually played, because I just bought them on clearance once the Wii game out.

Your favorite is One Piece: Grand Adventure; which is a pirate-themed fighting game. You’re better at it than me now!

Love,

Daddy
