Dear Jack: That Time You Were a Men’s Hair Stylist…

12 years, 5 months.

Dear Jack,

Now that your hair is long enough to maintain the official “flipty do” hairstyle of all junior high boys across America, and now that I officially started taking you to my own barber as well, it was inevitable that you would convince Mommy to buy you your own curling iron to fix your hair in the morning.

When you took it out of the box after it arrived in the mail from Amazon, you announced to me:

“Look, Daddy- it comes with a special styling glove!”

This past weekend, your new official hairstyle was a hot topic while Aunt Dana and Uncle Andrew visited us.

So of course, you volunteered Uncle Andrew to get his own “flipty do” hairstyle!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: Rebuilding Your Bike from Your Sister’s Old One?

12 years, 5 months.

Dear Jack,

Again I will say it: You are clearly an Enneagram 5. It’s so obvious to me now.

What truly makes you happy is to have hours to yourself, to work on a complicated, innovative, creative project.

The birthday gift your sister received from Nonna and Papa was a new bike.

I don’t recall you asking permission to do so, but you took it upon yourself to “scrap her old bike for parts” to “modify” your own bike.

Granted, your newly rebuilt bike sure isn’t pretty, but you definitely are proud of your newest creation… a stunt bike?

And your friends are impressed, too!

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: You Chose a Shopping Spree Over a Birthday Party!

7 years.

Dear Holly,

Mommy and I have always went all out for your birthday parties. However, this year, as we prepared the expenses of planning your 7th birthday party, we came up with a simple proposal for you:

What if we simply gave you cash for half of the expense that a birthday party with your friends would have cost us?

With no hesitation, you agreed to our deal.

So a trip to Walmart and Target, with a handful of 20 dollar bills, was your “birthday party” this year.

And you were so happy!

As you stated to Mommy and I a few months ago:

“Money is my BFF!”

Love,

Daddy

Dear Jack: You Got to Sit in a Real Corvette for the 1st Time

12 years, 5 months.

Dear Jack,

On Saturday morning, Nonna and Papa took you to a monthly car show that just happens to take place a mile away from our house. It’s actually surprising we had never taken you there, considering your recent new obsession with cars.

While you definitely enjoyed getting to see all the fancy classic cars there, I suppose your favorite part was when the owner of a new Corvette let you sit in the driver’s seat!

I’m pretty sure our family will now be making our way to that car show from now on each month…

Love,

Daddy

Dear Holly: Doing Chores to Earn Souvenirs?

7 years old.

Dear Holly,

Last week while Mommy and I were on vacation in Michigan, Nonna and Papa came up to take care of you and your brother.

While I definitely received many pictures of you playing and having fun, I also got this photo of you helping clean the house.

I am so grateful that you recognize the importance of contributing to chores; especially that you perceive it as fun, to some degree.

Of course, you knew good and well that Mommy and I would be bringing you souvenirs from Traverse City…

So I guess you earned them!

Love,

Daddy
